Mock Draft v1.0
by Jason Babler (aka Andy Dufresne)

**Tell "the other AD" exactly what you think of his mock in The Andy Dufresne Mock First/Stand-Up Act Discussion Thread**

This draft has a couple of assumptions. I'm going with what we know right now - e.g. Moss stays in Oakland, the current state of free agency - that sort of thing. No trades are projected. I'll do another next week where I go hog-wild with trade speculation, but for now, I'll keep it simple.

1. Oakland - Brady Quinn, QB - Notre Dame
The formerly near-consensus #1 returns to the spot he played himself out of in the loss to L.S.U. Word is that the Raiders were none too impressed with Jamarcus Russell showing up out of shape at the combine. Can they afford a QB that doesn't take the biggest job interview he'll ever face seriously? I can't decide which that is more like: A)Showing up at your own wedding with a beer can in one hand and a "lady of the evening" in another or B)arriving at a job interview with a Fortune 500 company wearing flip-flops, a pair of Zubas, and a tank top with gravy stains.

A lot of people will say "Quinn's not an Al Davis type". I'm not sure what that means anymore. The last time the Raiders were significant was when Rich Gannon was the starter. In fact, Quinn reminds me a bit of Gannon, with a splash of Tom Brady. Add to that the fact that Greg Knapp, a West Coast Offense guy, is the new OC and Lane Kiffin seems to fall into that philosophy. The argument that he "feasted on lesser competition" doesn't hold water either. He's many times the prospect that Alex Smith was and who did Smith play against at UTAH? Or Steve McNair at Alcorn State. Or Daunte Culpepper at Central Florida. I'm not comparing Quinn to these guys talent wise just yet, but hopefully you get the picture. The point is that Quinn was a four year starter at a major Division I school and that type doesn't just grow on trees. Where would Notre Dame have ranked with a lesser QB? I'm willing to wager they wouldn't even register on the national stage.Quinn has taken the post-season seriously and seems PO'd to have been bumped from the #1. He's NFL ready and the Raiders need that badly.

Why not CJ? Because I'm assuming that Moss stays. And while having CJ, Moss, Curry, and Porter would give you the best WR in the league by far, it won't win you many games. Left tackle will wait until the 2nd.

2. Detroit - Jamaal Anderson, DE - Arkansas
Obviously the Lions would love to move out of this spot. But the cost to another team moving up is quite high, and for this mock, I'm not assuming any trades. I don't think it's politically possible for them to take CJ, even if it’s probably the best pick they could make. I don't think they would see Russell as a fit for what they're trying to do. Adrian Peterson is a possibility, but it's tough to get a read on Kevin Jones' recovery. In my eyes, that leaves two possibilities - Joe Thomas and a DE and my choice is Jamaal Anderson.

The Lions are implementing the seemingly ubiquitous Tampa/Cover 2 defense which absolutely REQUIRES getting pressure on the QB from your defensive line. With Cory Redding playing like a demon after moving inside from end, and Kalimba Edwards not really panning out, there's a spot open at DE. They just acquired Dewayne White, late of the Bucs to fill the pass rush role. The Lions were also rotten against the run, and the end that matches up best on the other side of White seems to me to be Anderson since he's a better run stopper/pass rushing combo than Gaines Adams.

People will scream that this pick should be Joe Thomas and it very well may be. But the Lions are already paying Jeff Backus LT type money. Plus Jonathan Scott, who many had projected as a 1st/2nd rounder last year, started playing up to that level before succumbing to injury. And while George Foster was a bust in Denver's zone blocking scheme, he should do much better in Detroit's more straight-forward style. If there's a problem with the Lions line, it's with the guards. Verba's been cut and Woody's too fat. They have to fix that before another LT will matter.

3. Cleveland - Jamarcus Russell, QB - L.S.U.
Seriously now. Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson? Please. This franchise needs a big-time QB and Russell, despite his poor presentation at the combine, has ridiculous potential. GM Savage has worked with him quite a bit, and his strong arm would be a great asset in windy Cleveland.I don't think the addition of Jamal Lewis precludes the drafting of Adrian Peterson, and Joe Thomas is obviouslya possibility, but QB just makes more sense to a franchise that doesn't seem to have one on its roster.

4. Tampa Bay - Calvin Johnson, WR - Georgia Tech
Sometimes, life throws you a bone - Part I. With Joey Galloway applying for AARP benefits and Michael Clayton fresh off his "Invisible Man" audition, Johnson is a total steal here. Not much more can be said about him that hasn't already. He's a stud plain and simple.

5. Arizona - Joe Thomas, OT - Wisconsin
Sometimes, life throws you a bone - Part II. Releasing the under-achieving Leonard Davis leaves them with no choice but to draft Thomas. Of course NOT releasing him would have led to the SAME choice, but whatever. For the 5th season in a row, Arizona is "that close". But with the addition of Thomas, it they're closer than they've ever been.

6. Washington - Gaines Adams, DE - Clemson
It's either him or Alan Branch, and I think it's easier to find a DT later in the draft. Case in point - Kedric Golston in the 6th last year. Their current DE's, Daniels and Carter, are both getting old and the infusion of a young stud DE is imperative. Adams is arguably the best pass rushing DE in the draft and getting more pressure on the QB will help their suspect defensive backfield. You know your ship is sinking when you bring back Fred Smoot.

Did I just make a Smoot and boat joke? That's almost as bad as a "Lions take another receiver" or "The Vikings get skipped in the draft" joke. I should be flogged. Editor's Note: If this was the gong show, Jason would exiting stage left, but instead he gets to mock Adrian Peterson for his beloved Vikings

7. Minnesota - Adrian Peterson, RB - Oklahoma
If things played out this way, it would be a worst case scenario for the Vikings as their two biggest needs (outside WR, obviously) are for a pass rushing DE and QB. But in this scenario, the best options are gone. And rather than reach for someone like Carriker or Landry, they take the BPA route.

Personally, I think Adrian Peterson may be the BEST option for the Vikings. Look, the FA crop of WRs wasn't great to begin with and the value that WAS there didn't want to play in Minnesota. And in my eyes, no WR other than CJ is worth taking at #7. If this team is going to win games, it will be by running, running, and then running some more. Chester Taylor did yeoman's work last year, but with AP's explosiveness, he'd have had 500 more yards and many more TDs than Taylor did. Nobody is ever going to describe Chet as “explosive”.

With the two-back system working well in the NFL, the Vikes follow suit and make out like bandits as each back gets 350 carries and rushes for over 1000 yards. Unfortunately, the WRs catch 12 passes collectively the entire season and the Vikes finish 2-14.

One thing that cannot be discounted, however, is the Brad Childress factor. He's the smartest guy in the room, I don't care what room you're talking about. If all his players were Dungeon & Dragons characters, his coaching ability would give them all a 1.5x multiplier in all categories except, obviously, charisma. So they've got that going for them. Which is nice.

8. Houston - Alan Branch, DT - Michigan
Mario Williams rejoices as the addition of Branch will REALLY take the pressure off and allow him to do what he was drafted for. The Texans line was a wreck at the end of last year, having to pull guys off the street. Can you imagine how much better DeMeco Ryans can be if there's a DT keeping guys off him? Yikes!

Before you say "Levi Brown", I have to say that I don't think he fits the Texans' scheme. I'm still disappointed that with all the options out there, this franchise couldn't come up with a better nickname than "Texans".

9. Miami - Levi Brown, OT - Penn State
Because they have to. Which is a bad reason to take a player, but since they released McIntosh, they have nobody else to take over. They really need a cornerback, as their d-backs only accounted for 5 TOTAL picks last year, but LT is in worse shape. And if they're going into the season with Daunte "Gimpy in knee and in mind" Culpepper, the o-line needs major attention.

10. Atlanta - Laron Landry, SS - L.S.U.
Had Levi Brown gotten past Miami, I'd have Atlanta taking him as Petrino wants to move away from the zone blocking scheme to more of a power game. But alas, it was not to be. So we move to probably the most glaring need they have. Landry can play either safety position and there's talk that they may move Jimmy Williams to free. Couple these two together and draft another CB in the 2nd to go with Hall and your defensive backfield looks really good.

11. San Francisco - Adam Carriker, DT - Nebraska
The man has had a MONSTER post-season and is a tremendous addition to a rapidly improving 49ers defense. With this on top of signing both Nate Clements and Michael Lewis, the 49er faithful have to be encouraged. I don't necessarily like the additions they've made on offense, and could conceivably see them taking a WR here, but defense keeps you in the game and they're putting a good one together. If Manny Lawson continues to improve, this defense could be serious.

12. Buffalo - Marshawn Lynch, RB - California
Losing Clements hurt, but I believe they knew he'd be gone and that's why they took Youboty last year. If you look at the circumstances as to why Ashton didn't make more of an impact (mother's death, hamstring injury) it's understandable why he barely played. Trading away McGahee (a very good move, IMO) forces their hand a bit, but Lynch should be an impact player for a suddenly emergent offense. If they can get a legit #2 WR, watch out.

13. St. Louis - Amobi Okoye, DT - Louisville
The law of averages has to catch up in the Rams' favor sometime, right? After trying to fix their DT spot in several drafts, they take another run at it with the 19 year old phenom.

14. Carolina - Patrick Willis, LB - Ole Miss
Yes Dan Morgan has been cleared to play. But I don't think the Panthers want to take any chances. Willis put on quite a show at the combine and should be a stabilizer for the suddenly faltering Panthers D.

15. Pittsburgh - Ryan Kalil, C - U.S.C.
While this is a bit of a reach, the retirement of Hartings and the slow development of Okobi makes the need rather great. Another guy that had a tremendous combine. Along with Dallas, Pittsburgh is among the toughest teams to mock as there aren't glaring needs anywhere. They could easily use some help on the linebacking corps, and the CB's and WR's have some question marks.

16. Green Bay - Greg Olsen, TE - Miami, FL
I really want to give them Dwayne Bowe. But Greg Jennings looked pretty good before the ankle injury and the need at TE is just too great. Bubba Franks plays more like Bubba Gump now (no, I don't know what that means either) and Olsen is the only TE that looks capable of making an impact in Brett Favre's most current last year in the league.

17. Jacksonville - Ted Ginn, WR - The Ohio State University
Although they've drafted WR the last couple of years, none have panned out and none can stretch the field like Ginn can. The comparisons to Troy Williamson are ridiculous.

18. Cincinnati - Leon Hall, CB - Michigan
This is too low for the first CB to be taken off the board and I'm certain that one of Hall, Revis, and Houston will be gone before this, but it just worked out this way here. Hall's stock, which unfairly dropped a bit late in the season, is on the rise again after he proved that he can RUN given his solid 40 time at the combine. No, I won't make any jokes about Leon Hall's character fitting/not fitting the Bengal's standard profile.

19. Tennessee - Chris Houston, CB - Arkansas
Insert the sound Pac Man makes after being caught by Blinky ghost here. Too bad for the Titans too since he was playing so well for them. Houston's stock has soared in the post season. It's unfortunate the Titans have to burn a pick on this position since they really could have used a DE instead.

20. N.Y. Giants - Lawrence Timmons, LB - Florida State
This is a team that is in full-blown implosion mode. They lost top weapon Tiki Barber, their WR's are bad as a whole, the linebacking corps is a wreck, Petitgout was lost to the Bucs and Whitfield retired, and their defensive backfield is awful. Tom Coughlin has no chance and the new GM has a lot of work to do. I pulled out the Magic 8 Ball for this one, and it told me to take Timmons. It didn't give me a reason. M8B is pretty limited in its responses.

21. Denver - Charles Johnson, DE - Georgia
Dwayne Bowe and Robert Meachem have to get picked sometime, but Brandon Marshall looked legit last year and could be the #2 to Javon Walker. D-line is their biggest concern and Johnson is the best remaining DE. If they move Dre Bly, they may have to draft a corner or safety depending on where they play Domonique Foxworth.

22. Dallas - Justin Blalock, OG - Texas
The former Longhorn doesn't have far to travel as the 'Boys o-line, which played okay (just like the rest of the team) last year, gets a tremendous upgrade. His versatility is a major plus and it looks like the 'Boys are goin g to go more grind it out style (with a larger focus on Marion Barber), so Blalock's road grader style fits right in.

23. Kansas City - Dwayne Bowe, WR - L.S.U.
Bowe over Meachem because the Chiefs are still a running team and Bowe is the better blocker. But he's also proven that he's an outstanding receiver. A true #1 receiver has been a long time coming. They've gotten their money's worth out of Kennison, but now it's time to bring in new blood.

24. New England (from Seattle) - Paul Posluszny, LB - Penn State
The Patriots don't rebuild. They reload. Even though they added Adalius Thomas, the linebacking corps is still aging, and they lost up-and-coming Tully Banta-Cain to free agency. P-Squared (remember, you heard that nickname here first unless you've heard it already) is the type of guy that fits the Patriots mold perfectly. He doesn't have the on-paper measureables, but like was found out with DeMeco Ryans last year, they don't play football on paper.

25. N.Y. Jets - Darrelle Revis, CB - Pittsburgh
I have no clue in what order Hall, Revis, and Houston will be selected. All I know is that these three teams that took them really need an upgrade at the position. Dyson and Barrett aren't striking fear into anyone.

26. Philadelphia - Robert Meachem, WR - Tennessee
Not overpaying for injury prone* Donte Stallworth was a wise move. He brings a lot to the table when he's healthy, but the problem is that that isn't often enough. The Eagles normally shy away from WR's in the 1st, but it's a big need. In the limited amount I've personally watched Meachem, I've been really impressed. He had a breakout season and has done nothing but improve his stock, running and catching well at the combine. The Eagles need a field stretcher opposite Reggie Brown.

*I normally can't stand the term "injury prone" as I feel it's too liberally applied. Not so much in this case, though.

27. New Orleans - Aaron Ross, CB - Texas
As of this moment The Saints have addressed two areas of need in free agency - Eric Johnson at TE and Brian Simmons at LB. While this may be a bit high for Ross, he did win the Thorpe award this year and it is definitely the Saints' weakest spot.

How awesome is it to see this team turn it around as quickly as they have?

28. New England - Michael Griffin, SS - Texas
I know this is ahead of Nelson, which seems crazy, but the Patriots need a strong safety more than a free. Harrison can't play forever, and Griffin can fill in either right away or sit for a year. I can see the Patriots drafting a WR with one of these two picks as well. But with drafting Jackson last year, signing Stallworth, and acquiring Welker (a sneaky-good acquisition, I might add) minimizes that need a bit.

29. Baltimore - Joe Staley, OT - Central Michigan
The Ravens had to be disappointed that Tony Pashos left in free agency, but there was no way they were going to match the money that Jacksonville spent. Staley is a bit of a work in progress, but has the potential to be a major force at either tackle spot due to his athleticism. He could eventually take over for Ogden on the left side. A sneaky play here may be to take Drew Stanton as the QB of the future.

30. San Diego - Reggie Nelson, FS - Florida
Yes, I realize this is too low, but free safety is probably the least important positions in the defensive backfield. Nelson acquitted himself nicely during his Florda pro day as his combine was mediocre, running somewhere in the 4.3-4.35 region. This is a team with few weaknesses, but safety is one that’s apparent.

31. Chicago - DeMarcus Tyler, DT - North Carolina State
With Tank Johnson's legal issues, Tommie Harris' health issues, and Ian Scott's potential free agency issues, the Bears all of a sudden have a glaring need at DT. "Tank" has a few warts in his game. He's not a great pass rusher. But he doesn't have to be in the Bears' defense. He needs to occupy space and let the others make the plays. He's good at occupying space.

32. Indianapolis - Justin Harrell, DT - Tennessee
If they don't re-sign Cato June, they need to take a linebacker. But it's well documented that their run defense was atrocious last year. Had Harrell not gotten injured, he may have been the top DT taken. As it is, he'll have to settle for playing for the defending Super Bowl champions. Tough luck, kid.
