by Josh Buchanan

Josh Buchanan covers "pro hopefuls" for www.d2football.com, and helped select players for the Las Vegas All-American Classic and the Magnolia Gridiron Classic, and he was kind enough to share his small school prospect interviews with us.

RB Danny Woodhead, Chadron State

Josh.: What is your current height, weight and workout numbers?

Danny: I am guessing my height is around 5'7 1/2, my weight the pro day was 194 and my current weight is 202, and my 40 is a 4.41. My vertical was either 32 1/2 or 33 the last time we did it. My bench press was 18 reps the last time we did it. I want to say 4.1 or below but I can't remember. The last time I did it was on an indoor track. I don't know honestly what my time is now. I know I have been timed in the low 4s.

Josh.: Did you play any other sports in high school besides football?

Danny: Yes I did. I played basketball, soccer, and ran track.

Josh.: Do you have any relatives who played in the NFL?

Danny: No relatives in the NFL.

Josh.: What do you feel are your strengths and weaknesses?

Danny: I think my key is probably just the vision and I obviously have good speed and quickness but vision is one of the bigger things. I think I can work on my speed because it is something that can always get a little bit better. I want to work on my strength even though I have gotten it up some.

Josh.: Do you feel comfortable catching the ball out of the backfield?

Danny: Yeah. That is something I have always done. When I was in high school, I was a receiver my sophomore year. I was an inside receiver on passing downs some and I have caught the ball quite a bit at Chadron also.

Josh.: What is the biggest difference in D-1 football compared to D-II football?

Danny: You know it is hard to say because I am not there but I am guessing probably the depth. Also, D1 schools are looking for the prototype height and weight. There are even some prototype guys in D2. Depth is probably the difference but I think we have pretty good speed at the D2 level.

Josh.: What did the Harlon Hill Trophy mean to you by beating out outstanding players like Germaine Race and Jimmy Terwilliger?

Danny: Honestly it hasn't sunk in at all and I don't know if it is something that will ever sink in. Like you were saying there are great players who didn't win it and it is an honor to be mentioned with those guys and to get the award is something special.

Josh.: Some are hyping you as the best in the D2 ranks as far as the NFL goes. What is that like for you?

Danny: It is flattering to be considered one of the best in the small school ranks and I don't know if it is something I really expected coming out of high school because I never thought of a lot of D2 players getting a chance. It is something that keeps driving me each day.

Josh.: Who is the best player you have faced in your career?

Danny: I can't really think of one player. I would have to say the best defense was NW Missouri because they were all around the ball. I can't really think of just one player. I would say NW because they dominated.

Josh.: Who is the best player on your team?

Danny: It is hard to say because we have a lot of great players. The best person with a chance of maybe going somewhere is a corner named Beau Wendling. If he keeps working hard he will be pretty dang good. We also have a lineman who has a lot of potential too.

Josh.: Who else on your team has the potential to play in the NFL?

Danny: I would say Wendling and our lineman and it just depends on if some guys get a little faster. We have a safety who was really good named Paul and he had a really good year. If he gets faster he might have a shot. He is a smart player.

Josh.: What are your goals for this year?

Danny: I don't really have any goals for myself. That is something I never set. Definitely I think the goal is to win a national championship. I have yet to win one in high school and college and that is something I am setting my sights on.

Josh.: What are your future goals?

Danny: I want to get a chance to keep playing obviously and it really doesn't matter where. I want a chance to keep playing football because I am not ready to give it up and just get a job. I want to become a college football coach and start a family because I am getting married next year.
