Josh Buchanan covers "pro hopefuls" for www.d2football.com, and helped select players for the Las Vegas All-American Classic and the Magnolia Gridiron Classic, and he was kind enough to share his small school prospect interviews with us.
DE Brian Johnston, Gardner-Webb
Josh.: What is your current height, weight and workout numbers?
Brian: I was measured at 6'6 280 this past week. My 40 time was a 4.72 and 4.73 on grass and my shuttle was a 4.12 when we timed. My bench max is 460 and my vertical was 35 inches last spring.
Josh.: Did you play any other sports in high school besides football?
Brian: Track and field, I did the shot-put.
Josh.: Do you have any relatives who played in the NFL?
Brian: No I don't.
Josh.: What do you feel are your strengths and weaknesses?
Brian: I would say my strength is my knowledge of the game. My weakness is trying to make every play and sometimes I mess my assignment up while trying to make a play that is not mine to make.
Josh.: Who is the best player you have faced in your career?
Brian: I played against Reggie Bush in high school.
Josh.: Who is the best player on your team?
Brian: Would it be wrong to say me? Haha. I would say Duvaughn Flagler.
Josh.: Who all on your team is an NFL prospect in your mind that we should be looking at?
Brian: We have a receiver that could be Duvaughn Flagler if he works hard. We have a couple guys who have the measurables but they have not put it together on the field yet.
Josh.: What did winning the Big South Defensive Player of the Year award mean to you?
Brian: It means a lot because it showed that my hard work and dedication paid off. It was more like an award for our whole defense and I felt that everybody deserved it as much as me.
Josh.: What are your goals for this year?
Brian: I want to win the conference and crack the top 10 in defense. Individually I want to win the Buck Buchanan Award and the rest will take care of itself.
Josh.: What do you think you bring the most to an NFL team or all-star game or whoever you play for next?
Brian: I am an all-around player and I work hard off the field. I do whatever it takes to get the job done and more. I am never satisfied.
Josh.: Who is your favorite player to watch?
Brian: I try making my game like Shawne Merriman because he is an intense player. I love the way he gets after it.
Josh.: Do you read what the media writes?
Brian: I do because it motivates me to prove them wrong. If you read where some team is looking past you then you want to come out there and put it to them.
Josh.: What are your future goals?
Brian: I want to coach at the collegiate level because I love football and don't want to get away from it.
