1. Oakland Raiders - JaMarcus Russell, QB, LSU
His strength and agility will help in converting 3rd downs and allow a very good defense to rest, while allowing a new line time to find a groove. Any player that can benefit both sides of the ball should be a no-brainer..
2. Detroit Lions - Joe Thomas, LT, Wisconsin
Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals. It is not a measurable nor is a stat in the NFL. What it is however, is how you change a culture of losing for an NFL franchise. It is also what separates Joe Thomas from other lineman in the country who may have more punishing styles.
3. Cleveland Browns - Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma
Peterson will demand attention from d-coordinators and allow for a more balanced attack. If you are drafting this high, you probably have more than one area of focus, so you should draft the player that alleviates the most pressure and in my eyes that player is Adrian Peterson.
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech
There is only one thing wrong with Calvin Johnson, and that is that there is nothing wrong with Calvin Johnson. The Bucs could have a million needs, but a safer bet does not exist in this year's draft. His body control in the air is beyond superlatives. He can stretch the field vertically and keep you honest with his lack of fear to cross the middle. Oh yeah, his hands are money!
5. Arizona Cardinals - Alan Branch, DT, Michigan
Branch is a physical phenom who is always creating a new line of scrimmage, about two yards in the backfield. He flat out disrupts the offensive flow, better than anyone else in the draft. Great bookends would be great as well, but the edges are not where contenders make their living.
6. Washington Redskins - Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson
Gaines is a special blend of quick feet and great leverage which allows him to put great up-field pressure on an offense. He contains the play well, not getting to far up-field and has the agility to stunt to any gap on the line of scrimmage.
7. Minnesota Vikings - Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame
Quinn is a seasoned and prepared quarterback. He has been in a pro system and is battle tested against the elite programs in the college game. Sure he didn't win the big games, but he competed as hard as anyone on the field on every down.
8. Atlanta Falcons - LaRon Landry, S, LSU
Landry is a heat-seeking-missile along the line of scrimmage and has no fear at all about getting in the trenches. He has played linebacker in nickel coverage as well, displaying amazing heart and versatility,
9. Miami Dolphins - Greg Olsen, TE, Miami
Olsen is a work horse who is a technician in his route work and will be a great underneath man to complement Chambers over the top. He basically will allow the Dolphins another level of the field to work that was not there with the bigger McMichael.
10. Houston Texans - Levi Brown , LT, Penn State
Brown is an enormous tackle and that is the best way to describe his play. The Texans may be in need of a QB by April but unless the new guy has a kevlar uniform, he'll suffer a similar fate if the line is not addressed.
11. San Francisco 49ers - Amobi Okoye, DE, Louisville
The Niners need a receiver to help them stretch opposing defenses vertically. Carriker would work as well but in the 3-4 scheme he would be limited (speed) whereas Okoye is almost born to a 3-4 scheme.
12. Buffalo Bills - Leon Hall, CB, Michigan
Sound in all phases, Hall can support the run and play any technique at the corner position. The Bills need help regardless if Clements leaves and Hall is the best CB in the draft.
13. St Louis Rams - Jamaal Anderson, DE, Arkansas
How great would the Rams pass rush be if Little had some help in getting free? The answer is awesome and Anderson, though rough around the edges, is the perfect compliment.
14. Carolina Panthers - Patrick Willis, LB, Mississippi
If Willis is there and you need help at the LB position, which Carolina does with free agent currently on the roster, than you take the best LB in the draft. Willis is the man plain and simple.
15. Pittsburgh Steelers - Ryan Kalil, C, USC
Jeff Hartings is gone and by the grace of the football gods there's an answer to your problem in Ryan Kalil. Gil Brandt introduced him as the next "Tom Nalen" 'nough said.
16. Green Bay Packers - Marshawn Lynch, RB, Cal
I am not sure he will be there as I truly expect movement for Lynch but if he's there, oh what a steal he would be. The west coast offense, meet Marshawn Lynch, you guys will be great together.
17. Jacksonville Jaguars - Reggie Nelson, S, Florida
I can see Carriker here but when a ball hawk like Nelson is there in the same position as the guy you need to replace ( Deon Grant) you have to make a move.
18. Cincinnati Bengals - Chris Houston, CB, Arkansas
The former Bronco corners are on there way out and again here is the answer waiting in the draft. Houston is every bit as good as Hall and the pieces fit perfectly for Cinci.
19. Tennessee Titans - Sidney Rice, WR, South Carolina
The Titans prove to be twice lucky as now they find a weapon for Young. Meachem would work as well but Rice has attitude and wants the ball and you're going to need that attitude with Fisher.
20. New York Giants - Robert Meachem, WR, Tennessee
With the retirement of Tiki they will need to stretch the field to help the running attack. Meachem can do that and anything else Coughlin asks of him be it short middle or run blocking.
21. Denver Broncos - Adam Carriker, DE, Nebraska
Please try to get a "D" lineman not from Cleveland, I beg of you. Carriker is still available in my mock and this kid is easily one of the best lineman in the draft. Square peg fits square hole.
22. Dallas Cowboys - Paul Posluszny, LB, Penn State
Dat Nguyen has retired and you replace him with a hard nosed and sound player that can fit the bill immediately. Posluszny is ready right now to play football so this is easy if he's still there.
23. Kansas City Chiefs - Justin Blalock, OT, Texas
Staley or Blaylock would do but they MUST address the tackle position and Blaylock is a great fit because he is a great in-line blocker and can reach the second level. Look for the Chiefs to try to move and get Brown.
24. New England Patriots - Darrelle Revis, CB, Pitt
Just as he always seems to do, Bellichek will get a great answer to a nagging problem for the Pats. Receivers are plentiful and solid corners like Revis are few and far between in any year.
25. New York Jets - Brandon Meriweather, S, Miami
This kid can flat out play and may be the best safety in the draft, yes I said the best. The Jets need help on defense in a bad way and Meriweather can fly around the field, helping all aspects of the "D".
26. Philadelphia Eagles - Jarvis Moss, DE, Florida
Yes I know that Moss will probably be gone, but here he is still available and that should thrill the Eagles who would have bookends that would be feared week in and week out. If this shakes out this way watch out for some complex blitz schemes NFC East QB's.
27. New Orleans Saints - Jon Beason, LB, Miami
The Saints need a play maker on defense and Beason has the speed and pop to make things happen on a football field. Cornerback is also a need but Beason would be an absolute steal anywhere after 1.15 in this draft.
28. New England Patriots - Anthony Gonzalez, WR, Ohio State
Let the debate begin but Gonzalez has great field awareness and can find the soft spot better than most receivers in the draft. Bellichek scores again with a guy who will a tough cover in the NFL.
29. Baltimore Ravens - Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan
I see either Sears or Staley going to the Ravens , whomever is still there. Staley is the better fit for the Ravens because of his athleticism and ability to seal the corners.
30. San Diego Chargers - Dwayne Bowe, WR, LSU
Wow, this mock draft still has a monster prospect like Bowe left and the Chargers have few holes to fill but WR is one of them. Who are you going to watch for now?
31. Chicago Bears - Drew Stanton, QB, Michigan State
Though I still believe that Kolb may be the better prospect, Stanton brings better leadership and a proven ability to perform well in the elements.
32. Indianapolis Colts - Lawrence Timmons, LB, Florida State
Timmons is a tremendous linebacker and when you are at the bottom of the first round and can still get an athlete like him, your sitting very pretty.
Round Two
33. Oakland - Antonio Pittman, RB, Ohio State
34. Detroit - Anthony Spencer, DE, Purdue
35. Tamp Bay - Quentin Moses, DE, Georgia
36. Cleveland Browns - Arron Sears, OT, Tennessee
37. Chicago Bears - Ben Grubbs, G, Auburn
38. Arizona Cardinals - James Marten, OT, Boston College
39. Atlanta Falcons - Aaron Ross, CB, Texas
40. Miami Dolphins - Justin Harrell, DT, Tennessee, OT
41. Minnesota - Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC
42. San Francisco - Jason Hill, WR, Washington State
43. Buffalo - Lorenzo Booker, RB, Florida State
44. Atlanta - Johnnie Lee Higgins, WR, UTEP
45. Carolina - Zach Miller, TE, Arizona State
46. Pittsburgh - Brandon Siler, LB, Florida
47. Green Bay - Ben Patrick, TE, Delaware
48. Jacksonville - Tony Ugoh, OG/ OT, Arkansas
49. Cincinnati - Ikaika Alama-Francis, DE, Hawaii
50. Tennessee - Charles Johnson, DE, Georgia
51. NY Giants - Marcus McCauley, CB, Fresno State
52. St. Louis - Tanard Jackson, CB, Syracuse
53. Dallas - Paul Williams, WR, Fresno State
54. Kansas City - Steve Smith, WR, USC
55. Seattle - Tank Tyler, DT, NC State
56. Denver - Brian Leonard, RB, Rutgers
57. Philadelphia - Michael Griffin, S, Texas
58. New Orleans - Dave Ball, WR, New Hampshire
59. New York Jets - Quinn Pitcock, DT, Ohio State
60. Miami - Kevin Kolb, QB, Houston
61. Baltimore - Rufus Alexander, LB, Oklahoma
62. San Diego - Eric Weddle, S, Utah
63. New York Jets - Josh Beekman, G, Boston College
64. Tampa Bay - Doug Datish, C, Ohio State
