by Josh Buchanan

April 24, 2008

Josh Buchanan of www.d2football.com tackles a NFL mock draft featuring only small school prospects.

BY THE NUMBERS

1st Round

8- Number of selections from Appalachian State – most by any school.

5- Number of receivers taken in 1st round – most of any position.

4- Number of offensive tackles taken in 1st round.

3- Appalachian State’s 1st round picks – most by any school.

40 Time Superlatives

4.24- fastest 40 time of any player – ran by Slippery Rock FS Brad Mueller

4.34- average time of the top two draft picks.

ROUND ONE

1- 1- 1 Miami- CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie , T ennessee State, 6’1, 182, 4.29

DRC is the best player in this draft by far and fills a major need for Parcells. T his is a no brainer number one pick – for the first time ever in a mock draft?

1- 2- 2 St. Louis - CB Antwaun Molden , Eastern Kentucky , 6’1, 198, 4.39

Everyone is thinking Joe Flacco here but Molden is shooting up boards and unlike Flacco, he fills one of their top needs.

1- 3- 3 Atlanta - QB Josh Johnson, San Diego , 6’3, 213, 4.53

T he Flacco drop continues as Dimitroff goes for a mobile QB instead of the pocket passing Flacco.

1- 4- 4 Oakland- QB Joe Flacco, Delaware , 6’6, 237, 4.77

Al Davis would like to get a QB at some point and sees a lot of Jamarcus Russell in Flacco. He decides to take who he feels is the best player on the board.

1- 5- 5 Kansas City- WR Jerome Simpson, Coastal Carolina , 6’2, 199, 4.44

Simpson is the top player available and fills a need. His size/speed combo gives AFC defensive backs something to worry about.

1- 6- 6 New York Jets- WR Dexter Jackson, Appalachian State, 5’9, 179, 4.37

Jackson gives the Jets great speed and a solid return man. Philly thought about trading up to this spot knowing the Patriots would not let him slide past them.

1- 7- 7 New England from San Francisco - OLB Curtis Johnson, Clark Atlanta , 6’3, 237, 4.60

New England begins adding youth to the linebackers by bringing in a perfect fit for their 3-4 scheme. T hey thought about Kendall Langford but went with a faster Johnson.

1- 8- 8 Baltimore- DE Kendall Langford, Hampton, 6’6, 287, 4.95

Cincinnati almost got their guy in Langford but miss out here. T he Ravens snatch up what they feel is the biggest steal of the top 10 by getting a top 5 value at number 8.

1- 9- 9 Cincinnati - DE Brian Johnston, Gardner-Webb, 6’5, 274, 4.66

Corey Lynch almost comes off the board here, however, when Johnston slides down it becomes a no brainer to the Bengals to fill their biggest need and add speed to the front seven.

1-10-10 New Orleans- OG Chad Rinehart, Northern Iowa , 6’5, 311, 5.26

Rinehart gives them a versatile player they can put at center or his college position – tackle.

1-11-11 Buffalo- WR Arman Shields, Richmond , 6’1, 194, 4.37

Shields put up impressive numbers at Indy and fills Buffalo ’s a critical need. His size/speed combo is one of the most impressive of any top tier receiver.

1-12-12 Denver- OLB Bryan Smith, McNeese State , 6’3, 240, 4.54

A guy by the name of Corey Lynch almost goes here but they opt for a bigger need at linebacker once Bryan Smith falls, unexpectedly.

1-13-13 Carolina- FS Corey Lynch, Appalachian State, 6’0, 202, 4.58

FS is a big need for the Panthers and Lynch gives them not only a smart playmaker in the secondary but a special teams standout as well.

1-14-14 Chicago- OG Kerry Brown, Appalachian State, 6’5, 305, 5.16

T he Bears surprise by passing on the higher rated Brandon Keith due to his incident where he cited a riot. T hey also feel Brown gives them a future pro bowler.

1-15-15 Detroit - ILB Shane Simmons, Western Washington , 6’1, 236, 4.58

It is known Detroit wants a linebacker with their first round pick so they reach a little bit for Simmons who brings versatility as someone who can play outside and even special teams.

1-16-16 Arizona - O T Brandon Keith, Northern Iowa , 6’5, 345, 4.98

Keith’s drop is not too bad as the Cardinals decide to take a chance on a possible off field risk. If Keith pans out he could become a steal.

1-17-17 Minnesota - O T T haddeus Coleman, Mississippi Valley State , 6’8, 308, 5.25

T he Vikings take the most physically impressive of the linemen from the bowl circuit in this 6’8 monster – filling a top need.

1-18-18 Houston- O T Demetrius Bell , Northwestern State, 6’5, 297, 5.18

Bell ’s potential is unlimited once he gets NFL coaching and more experience.

1-19-19 Philadelphia- WR Pierre Garcon, Mount Union , 6’0, 207, 4.42

Garcon is the best D3 prospect to come through in years. His speed and return ability also gives them versatility.

1-20-20 T ampa Bay- RB Chad Simpson, Morgan State , 5’9, 213, 4.42

T ampa Bay considers Omon but opts for the faster Simpson.

1-21-21 Washington- OG Mackenzy Bernadeau, Bentley, 6’4, 306, 5.25

Washington wants a guard in the early rounds and gets their man here at 21. Bernadeau gives them an athletic player who can play guard or tackle.

1-22-22 Dallas from Cleveland- QB Brad Roach, Catawba, 6’6, 248, 4.77

A solid backup for Romo is among the goals for Dallas to find in this draft and Roach gives them that.

1-23-23 Pittsburgh - FB Jerome Felton, Furman, 6’0, 241, 4.68

Felton is the most complete fullback in this draft and fits the Steelers style.

1-24-24 T ennessee- RB Xavier Omon, Northwest Missouri State , 5’11, 230, 4.60

Omon is one of the most productive backs to ever come through the small school ranks. And gives T ennessee are tough, hard-working downhill runner.

1-25-25 Seattle- RB T im Hightower, Richmond , 6’0, 226, 4.62

Hightower’s physical style intrigues Seattle so they pull the trigger.

1-26-26 Jacksonville- O T David Hale, Weber State , 6’6, 310, 5.27

Hale is older than most prospects and probably kept him out of the top 20 but he gives the Jaguars a solid tackle for the future.

1-27-27 San Diego - CB Brandon Carr, Grand Valley State , 6’1, 207, 4.38

Carr is the most physically gifted corner outside of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and could be a steal

1-28-28 Dallas- CB Cary Williams, Washburn, 6’1, 187, 4.43

Regardless whether Dallas gets Pacman Jones or not they still want an insurance policy and Williams gives them that.

1-29-29 San Francisco from Indianapolis - OLB Vincent Redd, Liberty , 6’6, 263, 4.56

Redd is the most physically gifted OLB in this draft and could become a steal.

1-30-30 Green Bay- P Mike Dragosavich, North Dakota State , 6’6, 212, 4.89

Dragosavich is the best punter in the draft and a top 20 value – he gives Green Bay value, a strong leg, and fills a need.

1-31-31 New York Giants- WR Jayson Foster, Georgia Southern, 5’8, 173, 4.40

Foster gives Jerry Reese and company a speedy, versatile player who can return kicks, aid in trick plays, and play the slot position.

ROUND TWO

2- 1-32 Miami - ILB Joe Mays, North Dakota State , 5’11, 245, 4.70

Brings 1st round value to early 2nd - Mays will give Parcells a tough LB that reminds him of former Miami great Zach T homas.

2- 2-33 St. Louis- DE Alex Hall, St. Augustine , 6’5, 238, 4.65

Hall makes a big leap to the early 2nd round and brings speed and explosiveness to the Rams.

2- 3-34 Atlanta from Oakland- K Shane Longest, St. Xavier, 5’10, 177, 4.83

Atlanta would like to get a kicker and Longest is by far the best in the draft.

2- 4-35 Kansas City- OG Ben Hochstein, Nebraska-Omaha, 6’3, 289, 5.32

Hochstein brings NFL genes and good talent to a Chiefs line that needs immediate help.

2- 5-36 New York Jets- OLB Andy Studebaker, Wheaton , 6’3, 251, 4.56

Studebaker could be the steal of the 2nd round due to his 1st round ability but has injury concerns.

2- 6-37 Atlanta - RB Lex Hilliard , Montana , 5’11, 234, 4.66

Hilliard would have been a 1st rounder without the injury concerns and improved speed.

2- 7-38 Baltimore- OLB Kroy Biermann , Montana , 6’3, 216, 4.75

Biermann won the Buck Buchanan Award and falls this far? Could be a major steal.

2- 8-39 San Francisco- WR Jason Jones, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 6’1, 180, 4.32

Jones has made a fast rise up boards with his much better than expected 4.3 speed.

2- 9-40 New Orleans - ILB Ronnie McCullough, Bethune-Cookman, 5’11, 229, 4.82

Will be expected to provide immediate depth.

2-10-41 Buffalo- T E Matthew Sherry, Villanova, 6’4, 255, 4.67

Sherry is another player who has rocketed up boards after his solid postseason.

2-11-42 Denver - FS Bobbie Williams, Bethune-Cookman, 6’0, 214, 4.55

Could have been a 1st round pick but had a sub par season.

2-12-43 Carolina- WR Jaymar Johnson, Jackson State , 6’0, 177, 4.50

Could have landed in the 1st round but disappointed in his 40 time.

2-13-44 Chicago- WR Shaheer McBride, Delaware State , 6’2, 201, 4.61

Is one of the best receivers in this draft but lacks home run speed.

2-14-45 Detroit- DE Rudolph Hardie, Howard, 6’2, 270, 4.80

Surprising draft day faller gives Detroit great value.

2-15-46 Cincinnati- C Brennen Carvalho, Portland State , 6’1, 294, 5.00

Carvalho is possibly the best center in this draft and gives the Bengals great depth.

2-16-47 Minnesota- SS Michael Eubanks, Delta State , 5’11, 193, 4.58

Eubanks can flat out fly and provides an explosive defender who can get to the QB.

2-17-48 Atlanta from Houston- OG Shawn McMackin, Hofstra, 6’3, 295, 4.81

McMackin is the most athletic gifted lineman in this draft and has unlimited potential – the problem with potential is you haven’t done it yet.

2-18-49 Philadelphia - DE Derrick Gray, T exas Southern, 6’5, 266, 4.82

Gray has better than expected speed and could be a steal here.

2-19-50 Arizona- T E Matthew Mulligan, Maine , 6’5, 258, 4.78

Mulligan is another rising T E after his strong postseason performances.

2-20-51 Washington- WR Clyde Edwards, Grambling State , 5’10, 179, 4.49

Could be a surprise at this point. Edwards is better than advertised.

2-21-52 T ampa Bay- T E Drew Atchison, William & Mary, 6’6, 247, 4.65

Must gain weight but has a chance to be a good one.

2-22-53 Pittsburgh- D T Marcus Dixon , Hampton , 6’4, 294, 5.14

Fell as expected with off field issues but has the skill to become a steal.

2-23-54 T ennessee- T E Kolo Kapanui , West T exas A&M, 6’3, 271, 5.06

Was a 1st round lock until his disappointing 5.06 40 time at the NFL Combine.

2-24-55 Seattle- C Matt Roan, Southern Utah , 6’5, 293, 4.93

Very athletic but raw former T E still adjusting to center after playing tackle in college.

2-25-56 Green Bay from Cleveland- T E Chris Wagner, South Dakota State, 6’6, 259, 4.64

Highly athletic and underrated T E that could be a steal.

2-26-57 Miami from San Diego - QB Mark Nicolet, Hillsdale, 6’1, 217, 4.82

One of the smartest QBs in the draft and better than advertised arm.

2-27-58 Jacksonville- WR Bruce Hocker, Duquesne, 6’3, 209, 4.71

Lack of elite speed causes major drop. Has the skills to be a solid possession type.

2-28-59 Indianapolis - ILB Steve Allen, West Texas A&M, 6’1, 236, 4.71

The Colts usually don’t take players with baggage but can’t resist when Allen falls from early 2nd round value to pick 59.

2-29-60 Green Bay- QB Nick Hill, Southern Illinois , 6’3, 219, 4.86

Has a solid arm and gives the Packers a solid backup.

2-30-61 Dallas- RB Danny Woodhead, Chadron State , 5’8, 197, 4.38

Brings great speed and versatility but his lack of size is a question. Would have been a top 20 pick without a red flag due to lack of bulk.

2-31-62 New England - CB Alfred Phillips, Wagner, 5’11, 195, 4.51

Could have gone higher but has yet to be seen against top competition.

2-32-63 New York Giants- FB Mike Peterson, Northwest Missouri State , 6’2, 251, 4.59

They don’t let Peterson fall anymore due to great value. He also brings another dimension that Kevin Boss and Brandon Jacobs lack.
