Sixth Round Storylines

Trevor Scott, DE, Oakland - Oakland is thin at DE, even if Tommy Kelly slides over. Scott is an athlete, but his pass rush skills didn’t seem to translate at Texas Vs the Nation.

Marcus Henry, WR, New York Jets - The Jets needed a big, rangy target like Henry for the red zone. I expect him to make the roster.

Josh Morgan, WR, San Francisco - There is definitely opportunity at wideout in San Francisco. Morgan is a 2nd/3rd round talent at his best, but his effort and focus wavers.

Jalen Parmele, RB, Miami - Parmele is good try hard guy and grinder between the tackles. Ronnie Brown is getting close to the end of his rookie deal and Ricky, well, we know you can’t count on Ricky, and he’s gettin’ old to boot. Don’t be surprised if Parmele gets carries this year.

Corey Lynch, S, Cincinnati - The Bengals took probably the most questionable character on Draftguys TV in Jason Shirley, and they follow it with squeaky clean Lynch. There is also opportunity at safety in the Queen City.

Spencer Larsen, LB, Denver - At the end of training camp, the Broncos may find that Larsen is best true MLB on their roster. He shouldn’t be in on third down, but Larsen will get Niko Koutovides a run for his money.

Colt Brennan, QB, Washington - They took the biggest pretender QB in the draft last year, Jordan Palmer. We’ll see if they went two for two.

Athyba Rubin, NT, Cleveland - A coke machine shaped guy that is a perfect 3-4 NT. Phil Savage strikes again.

He’s a gambler, but he can make up for his mistakes!

Chad Rinehart should smash some face in Washington

I didn’t love his play at the Senior Bowl, but I like everything I’ve seen from Rinehart. He played LT at Northern Iowa and garnered consensus All-American honors for a reason — he’s particularly ferocious as a run-blocker. He gets to the second level pretty well despite a pedestrian 40 time, and he likes to create lanes for his backs. He doesn’t have the build of an obvious tackle in the NFL, but I think he’ll be an immediate fit inside at guard and will add toughness to Washington’s Hogs.

Redskins get a first round talent in the 2nd

Of course, there are as many as 60 players with some claim to first round talent, but if the Redskins had taken Devin Thomas at 21 (their original first), we would’ve applauded it as a solid pick. Heck, if Buffalo had nabbed Thomas at 11, that would’ve been entirely defensible, too.

Fantasy owners of Antwan Randle-El will probably lose out as a result of this choice, but Thomas may make life a little easier on Santana Moss.

One other note on Thomas: he set the Big 10 record with 1135 yards on 39 kickoff returns. That’s elite return talent right there (29.1 avg).

Duane Brown in the First… Russ Lande Called It Weeks Ago

Regular listeners of the Audible will remember when Sporting News draft guru and former Rams and Browns scout Russ Lande said “Duane Brown” when I asked him who the surprise first round pick would be. Massive OT run once the Bears took Chris Williams, and Philly and Washington are laughing and sitting on a draft pick bonanza.

Seattle has chosen, I’m feeling Henne or Thomas.

Talib Over Jenkins? Really?

Jenkins played his college ball in Tampa. He didn’t have an issue with the mean green. Or getting beaten repeatedly by the better WRs in his conference. Whether it’s Washington, Dallas, Pittsburgh, or another team in the twenties, someone is going to get a steal. Meanwhile, we’re hearing on the floor that some teams took Talib completely off their board - Gruden sure does like to give questionable characters the benefit of the doubt.

Catching my breath in between these trades, some interesting possibilities are emerging - Mendenhall a Cowboy? Merling a Steeler? or Mendenhall a Steeler? Jenkins, Mendenhall and Merling are the clear top three left on my board.

Has anyone figured out why Baltimore traded up? or why Carolina let Philly fleece them for an OT who only played two years of big time college football? The deeper we get into the first, the sillier it gets. I love it.
