Video profile of Joe Mays, LB, North Dakota State — now with the Philadelphia Eagles

Okay, I *have* to embed this player, because we think Mays will contribute on 1st and 2nd downs for a looooong time in this league, and we’re so thrilled to see him selected. When we made our show, he was in no one’s top 250, and now he made it to the Eagles as a 6th rounder.

My first “who?” pick of the day…

Bryan Smith dominated the FCS as a defensive end at McNeese State, but I freely admit I’ve never seen him play. But in 2007, he had 10.5 sacks and 22.5 tackles for loss. That’s no misprint — 22.5 tackles for loss. He’s considered an outstanding edge rusher, though the Eagles listed him as an OLB on their card. Should be exciting to see if this athletic talent can continue to tear up offensive gameplans in the NFL.

Best Players Available

Of course the QBs, Chad Henne and Brian Brohm. If Tarvaris Jackson and Kellen Clemens are 2nd round QBs, then Henne and Brohm are values at this point.

WRs - where does the list stop? Limas Sweed, Malcolm Kelly, Desean Jackson, Early Doucet, Andre Caldwell…

Mike Pollak, clearly the best center on the board, should go any pick now.

Martellus Bennett is the best two way TE in the draft, and he’s more athletic than John Carlson (what was Seattle thinking?)

Trevor Laws is going to be a better pro than Kentwan Balmer. I guarantee it.

Calais Campbell might have been a reach in the first, but his physical potential makes him worth a 2nd at this point.

Tyrell Johnson was the top safety on some boards, he’ll go any second now.

To add to the intrigue, Minnesota just traded up, let’s see who it was for… Henne?

Duane Brown in the First… Russ Lande Called It Weeks Ago

Regular listeners of the Audible will remember when Sporting News draft guru and former Rams and Browns scout Russ Lande said “Duane Brown” when I asked him who the surprise first round pick would be. Massive OT run once the Bears took Chris Williams, and Philly and Washington are laughing and sitting on a draft pick bonanza.

Seattle has chosen, I’m feeling Henne or Thomas.

PHILLY WINS

Well, for moving down 23 spots, Philly gets a 4th and the Panthers 09 first. Insanity.

Carolina is drafting like this is it for Fox and Hurney, and to be honest, it will be. Congrats Philly fans, your team aced the first round test.

Wiping the Egg Off My Face

I guess Philly didn’t want Otah that badly.

Carolina must have had Stewart and Otah very close, and decided to land them both. I wonder if Philly was able to pry Carolina’s 09 first from them - for the second straight year, Philly has traded out of the first.

You Had to Know Stewart Wasn’t Going To Fall Too Far, OL Run Coming.

And John Fox will finally play the younger RB? This is a serious indictment of DeAngelo Williams, a first round pick a mere two years. Interesting that the Panthers did not take go with the top offensive lineman left on their board. A definite kick in the gut for Arizona , who could see Rashard Mendenhall, the only other workhorse RB left on the board go right in front of them.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs could easily end up with Branden Albert at 17, a player many of us thought they would consider at #5. And Merling is still sitting there. And Mike Jenkins.

The Bears have to be thinking OL or RB here. Stewart going at 13 means Mendenhall won’t be far behind. Philly still has to sweat through Chicago and Houston to see if they get the OL they want at 19, don’t rule out a trade before we get to their natural pick.
