Jaymar Johnson was one of our favorite sleepers. He complements the burners on the Vikes very well with his precise routes. Possession receiver gold!

Video profile of Jaymar Johnson, WR, Jackson State — now with the Minnesota Vikings

Published by April 27th, 2008in 5th Round and Minnesota Vikings. 0 CommentsBefore the draft, I felt strongly that Brian Brohm fit well in Minnestoa. Their WRs may be deep threats first and foremost, but with that running game, the Vikes just need their QB to hit the open man and make smart decisions. I was surprised they passed on Brohm in the second, but I can understand why Minnesota took John David Booty for the same reasons. He’s heady, avoids mistakes, and could step in if Tarvaris Jackson continues to disappoint and Frerotte’s out of gas. I view Booty as a long-term back-up in the NFL, but he makes for a decent safety net on a loaded Vikings team.
Tyrell Johnson — the monster sleeper
Published by April 26th, 2008in 2nd Round and Minnesota Vikings. 0 CommentsTyrell Johnson’s not well known in most parts, but this fast, strong, instinctive safety from Arkansas State is the real deal.
Against the Texas Longhorns last fall, Johnson didn’t just play well, he dominated. I saw this game live, and Johnson was unbelievable. 14 tackles, 10 of them solo. He hit Jamaal Charles in the backfield for a 6 yard loss — the 4.3 speed Jamaal Charles. And he picked off Colt McCoy in the red zone. Those are big plays, clutch plays, and physical plays. Johnson also picked off 13 passes in his career, started 46 games, and piled up over 350 tackles in that time.
This also confirms Minnesota has little love for Brohm or Henne.
Best Players Available
Published by April 26th, 2008in 2nd Round, Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles. 1 CommentOf course the QBs, Chad Henne and Brian Brohm. If Tarvaris Jackson and Kellen Clemens are 2nd round QBs, then Henne and Brohm are values at this point.
WRs - where does the list stop? Limas Sweed, Malcolm Kelly, Desean Jackson, Early Doucet, Andre Caldwell…
Mike Pollak, clearly the best center on the board, should go any pick now.
Martellus Bennett is the best two way TE in the draft, and he’s more athletic than John Carlson (what was Seattle thinking?)
Trevor Laws is going to be a better pro than Kentwan Balmer. I guarantee it.
Calais Campbell might have been a reach in the first, but his physical potential makes him worth a 2nd at this point.
Tyrell Johnson was the top safety on some boards, he’ll go any second now.
To add to the intrigue, Minnesota just traded up, let’s see who it was for… Henne?
Kansas City Passes On Henne and Brohm for Flowers
Published by April 26th, 2008in 2nd Round, Chicago Bears, Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings. 0 CommentsAfter having Glenn Dorsey fall to them, and then moving up to snag Branden Albert, the Chiefs were in perfect position to get a QB to develop while we watch the latest installment in the Brodie Croyle follies. Maybe they really do still believe in the kid. Maybe they don’t like Henne or Brohm so much. Brandon Flowers is also a physical corner who should start by the middle of the year, and the kind of player Herm Edwards should be able to get the most out of.
Minnesota and Chicago have to be licking their chops at the prospect of one of Henne or Brohm falling to them.
Very Reasonable Price for New Orleans to Move Up, Not So Much for the Jags
Published by April 26th, 2008in 1st Round, Cincinnati Bengals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints. 1 CommentSwapping a third for a fifth to get ahead of Cincinnati and snag Ellis. Then the Jags trade up to poach Derrick Harvey right before their eyes. Do the Bengals now take Keith Rivers as the DBPA? Maybe take OL2? Either way, they should feel very important that two teams gave up valuable draft capital to leapfrog them. Sorry Bramel and Norton, you guys got a wedgie today. Five defensive linemen in the first eight picks - I think it’s clear where the strength of this draft lies.
Meanwhile, the Jags gave up about the same price to get Derrick Harvey as what Minnesota gave up to get Jared Allen. Well done, Vikes, and well done Ravens. Now the Ravens are sitting pretty to take Chad Henne/Brian Brohm/Joe Flacco at 26. Stay tuned.
