The Chiefs have Larry Johnson signed for a while, they reportedly like Kolby Smith quite a bit, and now they select Jamaal Charles.
This might’ve been a best-player-available sort of move, and he’s definitely a change of pace from his backfield roommates, but it’s surprising they didn’t go for more defense with someone like DE Kenny Iwebema or hit the OL with a choice like Oniel Cousins.
We like their choice of Bard Cottam at TE for sure, though. Injuries kept him from breaking out in a big way over his career, but this big kid can motor in pads and has solid hands. He really impressed us at the Senior Bowl, and he’ll be an outstanding red zone target. We like him much more than Seattle 2nd-rounder John Carlson.
After having Glenn Dorsey fall to them, and then moving up to snag Branden Albert, the Chiefs were in perfect position to get a QB to develop while we watch the latest installment in the Brodie Croyle follies. Maybe they really do still believe in the kid. Maybe they don’t like Henne or Brohm so much. Brandon Flowers is also a physical corner who should start by the middle of the year, and the kind of player Herm Edwards should be able to get the most out of.
Minnesota and Chicago have to be licking their chops at the prospect of one of Henne or Brohm falling to them.
And John Fox will finally play the younger RB? This is a serious indictment of DeAngelo Williams, a first round pick a mere two years. Interesting that the Panthers did not take go with the top offensive lineman left on their board. A definite kick in the gut for Arizona , who could see Rashard Mendenhall, the only other workhorse RB left on the board go right in front of them.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs could easily end up with Branden Albert at 17, a player many of us thought they would consider at #5. And Merling is still sitting there. And Mike Jenkins.
The Bears have to be thinking OL or RB here. Stewart going at 13 means Mendenhall won’t be far behind. Philly still has to sweat through Chicago and Houston to see if they get the OL they want at 19, don’t rule out a trade before we get to their natural pick.
The Vikes had Chester Taylor, and so what? The Chiefs need OL help, but so what? Take the best guy, especially if he’s the best guy in the whole draft.
Reaching for Brandon Albert or Ryan Clady here would’ve been remarkably short-sighted. Instead, they get what I just mentioned earlier — a Haynesworth-level of terror for opposing offenses. With leadership. And character. Celebrate yourselves, KC! This was a steal. And you’ll find plenty of great help in the 2nd for your OL and secondary.
Meanwhilel, I think the Bengals screwed up as much as the Saints. A guy like Dorsey can turn around their weaker unit immediately, and if they want to alter their image, they could ask for no greater presence than Glenn Dorsey.

Ok maybe that’s a little strong, but I certainly never expected Dorsey to be there, and I don’t know if the Chiefs did until this morning. I would love to know what New Orleans final offer was to move up and take one the biggest football heroes in Louisiana since Archie Manning. If the Chiefs get Philip Merling at 17, I might just have to become a fan. This team can actually afford to start someone like Tyron Brackenridge at CB with Dorsey collapsing the pocket and tying up two blockers, and Hali and Merling throwing people around.
Well Justin, you finally learn how to be patient and look for the hole, you get a new contract, and your reward is the #4 overall pick spent on a player at your position. Michael Bush, you worked hard to get healthy and play last year and your team held you back so they wouldn’t have to drop a running back that a division rival could pick up. Now you are third on the depth chart. Oakland fans, what can we say? Your owner is cuckoo for speed.
Kansas City fans, your team will get the best player in this draft if they do the right thing and take Dorsey. If they take Gholston, boycott their games.
