Caleb Campbell Gets Drafted and RCMH Explodes

No player’s name got as jubilant a reaction as Caleb Campbell’s who just went at the 218th pick to the Detroit Lions. He showed up here in his West Point uniform and did an interview with ESPN that was often interrupted by “U S A” chants. He’ll be a special teams demon and a Rod Marinelli favorite.

Fascinating Fifth Rounders

136. Kenneth Moore, WR, Detroit - Not a burner, or a big man, but a dependable target, and a good underneath/slot target, but don’t the Lions have Mike Furrey and Shaun McDonald for that?

139. Ryan Torain, RB, Denver - The annual ritual of fantasy footballers scrambling for the rookie Denver RB as the sleeper pick of the draft will be renewed again this year. Torain is a powerful back, and if his foot is healed, he might be the most physically talented back on the roster.

142. Zachary Bowman, CB, Chicago - Bowman has suffered some devastating knee injuries, but his speed seems to be intact, and he could end up being a starter if he plays as well in the pros as he did this year at Nebraska.

153. Matt Slater, ST, New England - New England spends a fifth on a special teams demon. I like it. At this point in the draft, a player who can be an emergency player on offense or defense and become the star of the special teams coverage units is a NICE pick.

156. Dennis Dixon, QB, Pittsburgh - Kordell Stewart. Hines Ward. Antwaan Randle-el. Version 4.0: Dennis Dixon.

We like him a lot more than Kevin Smith, even as a fullback…

Andre Fluellen a perfect fit for DET’s Cover 2 D

Think Tommie Harris, but maybe a bit more mortal. That’s the type of player the Lions snagged in Andre Fluellen — he’s a slightly undersized but quick DT who penetrates upfield and fits exactly what Rod Marinelli’s scheme demands of its tackles. He could step right into that rotation and make an impact, especially on passing downs.

Don’t be disappointed by Fluellen’s ho-hum stats at Florida State, Lions fans. He’s going to make a lot of memorable plays in the near future.

Update: Wow! Avril fits perfectly as a DE in the cover 2, as well! The Detroit D-line’s looking a lot better. If the small-ish Dizon can hold up at LB, this team should be much more stout in the front seven and start to shed that soft reputation.

Kevin Smith was a must-have?

Wow, with both Jamaal Charles and Smith on the board, the Lions traded up two spots for Smith. Why? he and Charles are remarkably similar — both have straight-line speed, can struggle to break tackles, and look a lot like Tatum Bell 2.0. Even as someone who doesn’t like Charles’ game as much as some pundits, I would take him over Kevin Smith — he’s consistently made big plays against tough defenses over the years, and when I watch Smith run, I see him go down on first contact of any kind more often than Charles. Charles fumbles, but McFadden coughed up 15 balls himself and folks don’t seem so concerned about that.

Smith should get a good shot to start, though, so he’s got immediate fantasy football value.

Go Go Gosder

Well I’m relieved that he won’t be in Black and Gold. The Lions do need a tackle, and Cherilus can step in and play RT right away, which will get George Foster off the field, something that should make every Lion fan happy.

We’re happy for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. He’s a humble and soft-spoken kid, and he really proved a lot at the Senior Bowl. Mike Jenkins would be a no brainer pick for Houston now, but then again you could say the same about Rashard Mendenhall, and maybe even Jeff Otah.

**TRADE ALERT**

Did Balitmore just trade up for Otah, or Jenkins, or *gasp* Henne?

KC a Winner

And Detroit is settling, just as we thought. With Grimmenhunt at the wheel in Arizona, the Chiefs had to make sure the offensive linesmiths in the desert didn’t poach Albert from right in front of them.

Meanwhile, OL and CB value is sitting there, as is Philip Merling and Rashard Mendenhall. The Cards need a CB in the worst way, I expect to hear Jenkins or DRC in about 2 minutes.

Detroit – Getting Kicked While They’re Down

The Lions join the Bengals as a team who saw their top 2 targets on defense vanish before their very eyes. Rashard Mendenhall? Jonathan Stewart? An offensive tackle? No matter who the pick is, it feels like the Lions will be settling instead of celebrating in the war room.
