2 quietly excellent 3-round drafts: Buffalo and Arizona
Published by April 27th, 2008in Arizona Cardinals and Buffalo Bills. 0 CommentsBuffalo hasn’t made a big splash, but they got a solid return man and a corner with shutdown potential in the first with Leodis McKelvin. Then they grabbed a huge underneath target and red zone threat (notably, the two things Lee Evans doesn’t do that well) in James Hardy. Hardy may have some character issues, but he’s certainly a talent worth gambling on in the 2nd. And so far today, they picked up an All-ACC DE, Chis Ellis, who had 38 QB pressures in 2007 alone. He may be a stand-up ‘backer for the Bills, but he’ll certainly be an effective blitzer.
Meanwhile, the Cards got my favorite corner (who’s also a pretty good returner) in Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. He’s so fluid and so instinctive, and he’s such a humble kid — plus, he chewed up elite talent at the Senior Bowl, so I am utterly unconcerned about the small school knocks. Then they snag Calais Campbell as a dirty-work 3-4 DE in the 2nd and, unbelievably, Early Doucet falls into their laps in round 3. Doucet was often projected in the first because he’s a precise route runner who can get separation because he doesn’t tip his cuts. He’s also bull-strong with biceps similar to those of recently-departed Bryant Johnson. All of these guys are ready to contribute now — and have high ceilings to boot.
Well played, guys.
Blue Light Special in Aisle Three
Published by April 27th, 2008in 3rd Round, Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers. 1 CommentLots of values in the NFL Draft in the beginning of the second day, let’s take a closer look at some of the players who should outperform some of the first day picks:
Charles Godfrey, CB, Carolina - He’ll be better than Terrence Wheatley, Patrick Lee, or Terrell Thomas. He can also be worked in slowly, as a dime back at first, because Carolina has three good corners in Marshall, Gamble, and Lucas.
Earl Bennett, WR, Chicago - Instantly the most dependable WR on the Bears roster under 30. Bennett will make the tough catches over the middle and snare errant passes from Grossman or Orton or Jim McMahon coming out of retirement.
Tavares Gooden, LB, Baltimore - Ray Lewis gets to mentor the best young LB from the U in the draft this year. Isn’t that special?
Chris Ellis, DE, Buffalo - He was announced as an LB, but he’ll help be helping Ryan Denney and Chris Kelsay stay healthy.
Reggie Smith, DB, San Francisco - While Michael Lewis headhunts, Reggie Smith can cover the deep middle, and he can be a nickel/dime back right away.
Pat Sims, DT, Cincinnati - Here’s your consolation prize for missing out on Sedrick Ellis, Bengal fans. Sims is a little soft around the middle, but he can be a space eater and let those athletic LBs do some damage.
