Fascinating Fifth Rounders
Published by April 27th, 2008in 5th Round, Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers. 0 Comments136. Kenneth Moore, WR, Detroit - Not a burner, or a big man, but a dependable target, and a good underneath/slot target, but don’t the Lions have Mike Furrey and Shaun McDonald for that?
139. Ryan Torain, RB, Denver - The annual ritual of fantasy footballers scrambling for the rookie Denver RB as the sleeper pick of the draft will be renewed again this year. Torain is a powerful back, and if his foot is healed, he might be the most physically talented back on the roster.
142. Zachary Bowman, CB, Chicago - Bowman has suffered some devastating knee injuries, but his speed seems to be intact, and he could end up being a starter if he plays as well in the pros as he did this year at Nebraska.
153. Matt Slater, ST, New England - New England spends a fifth on a special teams demon. I like it. At this point in the draft, a player who can be an emergency player on offense or defense and become the star of the special teams coverage units is a NICE pick.
156. Dennis Dixon, QB, Pittsburgh - Kordell Stewart. Hines Ward. Antwaan Randle-el. Version 4.0: Dennis Dixon.

The first Cardinals choice I don’t like
Published by April 27th, 2008in 5th Round and Arizona Cardinals. 0 CommentsWe saw Xavier Omon from NW Misouri State and Tim Hightower at the same all-star game, and I shot footage of both. We made a profile out of Omon’s work because we were convinced he was a future impact player as a ballcarrier. But Hightower, while chiseled and possessing some power, looked average (or worse) against solid competition. He didn’t seem like he could get away from anybody and lacked explosion. Omon had plenty of the latter along with his power. But the Cards went with Hightower anyway. I’d love to now what their scouts saw in him that moved him this high on their board…

John David Booty lurking in Minnesota
Published by April 27th, 2008in 5th Round and Minnesota Vikings. 0 CommentsBefore the draft, I felt strongly that Brian Brohm fit well in Minnestoa. Their WRs may be deep threats first and foremost, but with that running game, the Vikes just need their QB to hit the open man and make smart decisions. I was surprised they passed on Brohm in the second, but I can understand why Minnesota took John David Booty for the same reasons. He’s heady, avoids mistakes, and could step in if Tarvaris Jackson continues to disappoint and Frerotte’s out of gas. I view Booty as a long-term back-up in the NFL, but he makes for a decent safety net on a loaded Vikings team.
