Not feeling as bad about Chris Johnson

Really, when you think about it, the selection of Chris Johnson says more about the previous two years of Titans draft failures than it does about screwing up this one. I think what really burns me is how quickly they give up on a highly-picked guy and then select another guy *just like him* for the same reasons and somehow hope for the best again. And sure enough, the Titans are still following the same “40 first” philosophy that’s gotten them in trouble with pretty much every first day pick over the last two drafts.

When you think about *just* Johnson, though, you can make the argument he’s closer to McFadden than a lot of people might think. Don’t believe me? Watch him bust tackles and big runs in his highlight reel, paying special attention to how many guys taking *good* angles still can’t even come close to catching him:

His pad speed, balance, and drive through tackles form a potent skillset. I can live with the pick, though I’m still not sure I can live with what it says about the way the Titans play this very important game called the NFL Draft.

Press conference highlights

Q: How does it feel to be the highest-paid offensive lineman? And do you have any plans for investing that money?
Jake Long: You know, it’s crazy to think that, but having that over my head makes me go out there and work hard to show people that I’ve earned it, and that I’ve got to go out there and prove to people that it was the right choice. You know, I’m going to be putting my money in the bank and not touching it for a while.

Q: you talked about wanting to get on the field next season. Is it your attitude maybe that the best way to learn is going to be on the field?
Matt Ryan: Well, I don’t think there is a right or wrong way to do it. Guys have been successful coming in and playing, and guys have been successful coming in and learning from the bench. But for me, as a player, you want to be out on the field. So I’m going to do everything I can to prepare myself to be in the best position to play next year.

Q: Did your dad give you any guidance in this whole process?
Chris Long: No, he just told me to be myself. You know, control what I can control. Towards the end, actually, I had to flip the advice on him because he was very nervous, he was more nervous than me, you know. And we had to look at it like this, you know — played all the football I can play in college, the tape is there, the Combine’s over, Pro Day’s over. Let the chips fall where they may today, and that’s what happened.

Q: Excited to go against Jake twice a year now?
Vernon Gholston: (Laughs) I’m not really sure about that. My job is just to get with the team, work as hard as I can. And if that presents itself, then, you know, I’ll be looking forward to it.

It Ain’t a Draft If Jets Fans Don’t Look Confused

Overheard: “A 6′2″ tight end?”

Jets fans had started a “De-Vin Thom-as” chant, insuring that Thomas would NOT be the pick.

Was a team really going to take Keller in the next six picks? Maybe they thought Green Bay would take him? I suppose he’ll add a physical receiver who can rip the seams, but he’s a one-dimensional player. I do love his mentality on the field, and he attacks the ball, so I like the player, but I don’t know that he changes the offense enough to trade up. Hopefully they didn’t give more than a 6th round pick.

Balmer over Groves… and Jackson over Merling?

Really? After SF just signed Justin Smith to a huge deal? What gives?

Quentin Groves is going to be one of the steals of the draft. It’s almost unfair if Parcells gets this year’s Demarcus Ware at the top of the second.

I also don’t understand why the Seahawks took Jackson over Merling. They have a good pass rush, they need stout defensive lineman.

Meanwhile, in the neverending cavalcade of trades, the Jets are now on the clock. Henne? Brohm? A Groves-Gholston set of pinchers?

Duane Brown in the First… Russ Lande Called It Weeks Ago

Regular listeners of the Audible will remember when Sporting News draft guru and former Rams and Browns scout Russ Lande said “Duane Brown” when I asked him who the surprise first round pick would be. Massive OT run once the Bears took Chris Williams, and Philly and Washington are laughing and sitting on a draft pick bonanza.

Seattle has chosen, I’m feeling Henne or Thomas.

Chris Johnson = worst. pick. ever.

Let’s see now, in the last 3 years, the Titans have burned a 1st and 2 2nds now on RBs with tantalizing skills who appear ill-suited to carry the load in the NFL. Chris Johnson is just like Chris Henry last year — the fastest back in the draft with little to show for his speed. Is Johnson better? Sure. But why do the Titans continue to ignore so many other needs when RBs are often found in the later rounds?

The pick of Johnson isn’t necessarily terrible in a vacuum, but it points to a disturbing trend. Clearly, the Fisher/Reinfeldt decision team looks first at 40 times, and maybe *only* at 40 times, when choosing their first-day players. Griffin, Henry, Paul Williams, and now Johnson had little else to recommend them at the spots they were chosen. And remember — this is the team that thought Griffin’s 40 time alone was enough to turn him from a safety to a corner. That experiment lasted about 2/3rds of a season.

So now the Titans still lack a second pass rusher, still have a shaky secondary, still have no wideouts. And they had Merling, Jenkins, and Thomas on the board and ready to slap on a Titans cap. But hey, they have two of the fastest backs in the entire league.

If the road to the Super Bowl ever transforms into a track meet, maybe they’ll get somewhere.

Offense dominates the middle of the 1st

With the Titans’ ridiculous choice of Chris Johnson, 11 of the last 13 picks have been offensive players at QB, RB, or OL. Clearly, with defensive players crowding the top of the draft, teams with offensive needs were posed to reap the rewards in the teens and early 20s.

Meanwhile, for my money, Dallas will either be kicking themselves or pumping fists like Tiger Woods… it all depends on what happens with Jenkins. To me, there was an excellent chance Felix Jones would fall to 28 given that Mendenhall was still available. But Jenkins is much more likely to be gone before then. Will they regret passing on a fine complement to Newman? This reporter says yes. Unless he falls to 28.

Here We Go Steelers… Here We Go

Please…. Jenkins or Merling… Puuuhhhlease

*praying*

I guess sometimes it is that easy to mock picks. Did anyone have Mendenhall at RB4 (or later?)

Were the Steelers About To Take Baker?

Why in the name of all that is good did Atlanta trade up to take a player that most of us had as a second round pick? The only thing I can think of is that they had intel that the Steelers were going to take him.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys have their choice of Mendenhall or Jenkins or any safety or WR or role playing RB they want. The Steelers should be happy with Merling, Jenkins, or Mendenhall. And Titans fans should revolt if Merling is there and they don’t take him.

Should be fun to see if Jerry Jones really does break the seal on drafting Hogs for his team.
