The Fans Have Found Another Reason To Boo

The Bears insist on using most their of five minutes for their seventh round picks. The fans here are ready to revolt. It’s gotten so bad that a fan that won the “dream draft” contest, and got to announce the Bears pick as part of the prize, he was booed as loudly as the fans have been booing the Patriots. You can hear random voices in the crowd screaming “Just take me!”. The end of the seventh round is always good for laughs.

Caleb Campbell Gets Drafted and RCMH Explodes

No player’s name got as jubilant a reaction as Caleb Campbell’s who just went at the 218th pick to the Detroit Lions. He showed up here in his West Point uniform and did an interview with ESPN that was often interrupted by “U S A” chants. He’ll be a special teams demon and a Rod Marinelli favorite.

Sixth Round Storylines

Trevor Scott, DE, Oakland - Oakland is thin at DE, even if Tommy Kelly slides over. Scott is an athlete, but his pass rush skills didn’t seem to translate at Texas Vs the Nation.

Marcus Henry, WR, New York Jets - The Jets needed a big, rangy target like Henry for the red zone. I expect him to make the roster.

Josh Morgan, WR, San Francisco - There is definitely opportunity at wideout in San Francisco. Morgan is a 2nd/3rd round talent at his best, but his effort and focus wavers.

Jalen Parmele, RB, Miami - Parmele is good try hard guy and grinder between the tackles. Ronnie Brown is getting close to the end of his rookie deal and Ricky, well, we know you can’t count on Ricky, and he’s gettin’ old to boot. Don’t be surprised if Parmele gets carries this year.

Corey Lynch, S, Cincinnati - The Bengals took probably the most questionable character on Draftguys TV in Jason Shirley, and they follow it with squeaky clean Lynch. There is also opportunity at safety in the Queen City.

Spencer Larsen, LB, Denver - At the end of training camp, the Broncos may find that Larsen is best true MLB on their roster. He shouldn’t be in on third down, but Larsen will get Niko Koutovides a run for his money.

Colt Brennan, QB, Washington - They took the biggest pretender QB in the draft last year, Jordan Palmer. We’ll see if they went two for two.

Athyba Rubin, NT, Cleveland - A coke machine shaped guy that is a perfect 3-4 NT. Phil Savage strikes again.

Fascinating Fifth Rounders

136. Kenneth Moore, WR, Detroit - Not a burner, or a big man, but a dependable target, and a good underneath/slot target, but don’t the Lions have Mike Furrey and Shaun McDonald for that?

139. Ryan Torain, RB, Denver - The annual ritual of fantasy footballers scrambling for the rookie Denver RB as the sleeper pick of the draft will be renewed again this year. Torain is a powerful back, and if his foot is healed, he might be the most physically talented back on the roster.

142. Zachary Bowman, CB, Chicago - Bowman has suffered some devastating knee injuries, but his speed seems to be intact, and he could end up being a starter if he plays as well in the pros as he did this year at Nebraska.

153. Matt Slater, ST, New England - New England spends a fifth on a special teams demon. I like it. At this point in the draft, a player who can be an emergency player on offense or defense and become the star of the special teams coverage units is a NICE pick.

156. Dennis Dixon, QB, Pittsburgh - Kordell Stewart. Hines Ward. Antwaan Randle-el. Version 4.0: Dennis Dixon.

Indianapolis - Does Any Team Ace The Draft More Consistently?

The Colts didn’t have a first round pick, but that’s because they were able to turn it into Tony Ugoh last year, who filled the massive vacuum left by Tarik Glenn’s retirement. In the second round this year, all they did was take a player who can start at guard right away in Mike Pollak, which takes the sting out of division rival Tennessee’s signing of Jake Scott. Pollak should also end up being an eventual replacement for Jeff Saturday in the middle of the offensive line. In the third, the Colts took one of my favorite players in the draft, Philip Wheeler - he’s decent enough dropping into coverage to play the middle in the cover 2, and he’s one of the best blitzing linebacker in the draft. In the fourth, they get a one-dimensional TE in Jacob Tamme, but the Colts rarely ask their TEs to do anything but catch the ball. Tamme is clutch, and he’s courageous over the middle.

We get tired of saying this, but well done Polian & co.

Clarity in Cleveland

You have to give it up for Phil Savage. He trades away the Browns first, second, and third round picks to get Brady Quinn, and beef up the D-Line with Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers. Then, after patiently waiting, he makes his move to get a perfect run stuffing 3-4 ILB in Beau Bell (who reminds me of Jeremiah Trotter) and a receiving threat at TE in Martin Rucker that can make two TE sets as lethal as most teams four wide sets in the passing game.

Best Players Available as We Enter the Fourth

Andre Woodson, QB, Kentucky - Yeah, he has a hitch in his delivery, and we’re not sure if he can throw into small windows, and his ball kind of floats instead of zips, but come on, QBs with his size and athleticism and big time college football experience don’t usually last til the 4th round.

Tashard Choice, RB, Georgia Tech - High character kid, will run inside, good hands, everything you want in a backup RB who can start a few games in a pinch.

Owen Schmitt, FB, West Virginia - I know old school fullbacks are going out of style, but Schmitt is worth a fourth because of he raises the level of play of everyone around him with his warrior mentality.

Carl Nicks, OT, Nebraska - Banned from the pro day, but if Mario Manningham is worth the risk now, Nicks is and then some.

Xavier Adibi, LB, Virginia Tech, Gary Guyton, LB, Georgia Tech - These guys flat out get after it. Adibi is undersized, but cover 2 teams shouldn’t care. Guyton might seem like a one year wonder, but he also had a sick combine, and is a heady player who can rush the passer, fill against the run, and drop into coverage with equal aplomb.

Red Bryant, DT, Texas A&M, Ahtyba Rubin, DT, Iowa State - Guys who are built like coke machines that can tie up two blockers at the point of attack are hard to find. Neither one should last much longer.

NFL Fans Heart the Patriots

Every time the Patriots get mentioned, or shown on the big screen, or someone coughs and it remotely sounds like “Belicheck”, the entire place boos. The NFL should send them residuals on the TV deal because the league finally has the villain to keep fans interested even when their team isn’t playing. The Pats have now reached Yankees status - Everyone’s second favorite team is “Whoever is playing the Pats”

On the Milk Carton

Cliff Avril, DE/OLB, Purdue - Great combine numbers, and Purdue has been a 3/4 OLB assembly line the last few years. Bryan Smith and Bruce Davis are very similar, so you know that Avril is getting no respect on draft boards.

Andre Caldwell, WR, Florida - There must be some bad medical stuff from his combine exam. He’s definitely as good as at least five wideouts who have already been selected.

Anthony Collins, OT, Kansas - Teams reach Sam Baker and Duane Brown, but Collins hasn’t gotten a sniff in the first 89 picks?

Dre Moore, DT, Maryland - Kentwan Balmer is a first round pick, and Moore is still on the board in the late third? What Gives?

Justin King, CB, Penn State - How does a corner that runs a sub 4.4 40 last this long?

Blue Light Special in Aisle Three

Lots of values in the NFL Draft in the beginning of the second day, let’s take a closer look at some of the players who should outperform some of the first day picks:

Charles Godfrey, CB, Carolina - He’ll be better than Terrence Wheatley, Patrick Lee, or Terrell Thomas. He can also be worked in slowly, as a dime back at first, because Carolina has three good corners in Marshall, Gamble, and Lucas.

Earl Bennett, WR, Chicago - Instantly the most dependable WR on the Bears roster under 30. Bennett will make the tough catches over the middle and snare errant passes from Grossman or Orton or Jim McMahon coming out of retirement.

Tavares Gooden, LB, Baltimore - Ray Lewis gets to mentor the best young LB from the U in the draft this year. Isn’t that special?

Chris Ellis, DE, Buffalo - He was announced as an LB, but he’ll help be helping Ryan Denney and Chris Kelsay stay healthy.

Reggie Smith, DB, San Francisco - While Michael Lewis headhunts, Reggie Smith can cover the deep middle, and he can be a nickel/dime back right away.

Pat Sims, DT, Cincinnati - Here’s your consolation prize for missing out on Sedrick Ellis, Bengal fans. Sims is a little soft around the middle, but he can be a space eater and let those athletic LBs do some damage.
