Wow, with both Jamaal Charles and Smith on the board, the Lions traded up two spots for Smith. Why? he and Charles are remarkably similar — both have straight-line speed, can struggle to break tackles, and look a lot like Tatum Bell 2.0. Even as someone who doesn’t like Charles’ game as much as some pundits, I would take him over Kevin Smith — he’s consistently made big plays against tough defenses over the years, and when I watch Smith run, I see him go down on first contact of any kind more often than Charles. Charles fumbles, but McFadden coughed up 15 balls himself and folks don’t seem so concerned about that.
Smith should get a good shot to start, though, so he’s got immediate fantasy football value.
