Sig called it. 11 of the first 12 picks in the 2nd round were traded as team mindsets shifted from “how could you spend a 1st on that guy?!” to “he’s still on the board in the 2nd?! we gotta go get that guy!”
Some thoughts on the moves…
San Diego scored a nice playmaker in Eric Weddle. He played both CB and S at Utah, tackles really well (though he needs to add strength) and always seems to come up big at big moments. But they also gave up quite a bit to make the move, selling out much of the rest of their draft. Given how much talent will still be available in the 3rd, and how similar it is to the talent available in the 2nd, giving away a 3rd to move up in the 2nd could cost you a future starter.
Minnesota sure likes tall South Carolina burners who need to run better routes, don’t they? Of course, they didn’t take this one 7th overall, meaning they risked much less to try on Sidney Rice for size.
San Francisco coughed up a future first to nab OT Staley, then score one right back from Indy so the Colts can grab erratic Tony Ugoh. Bloom rightly noted that the 49ers seem to be growing into the NE/Denver mode of playing the draft game to your advantage instead of panicking and overpaying later for someone now.
Perhaps Atlanta wants to move Jimmy Williams to S after all; taking Chris Houston suggests so, anyway. Their second trade scored them one of the surest players left in the draft in Justin Blalock. Blalock could play 4 positions on the line, though he’s best suited for guard. As a 4-year starter who brought the pain on nearly every play and scored at the top of his class on the Wonderlic, he doesn’t give a team much cause for worry.
Miami took a QB after all, acquiring John Beck. Noted scout Russ Lande had him rated ahead of Brady Quinn before the draft, and it’ll be interesting to see if the Dolphins made the right call passing on Quinn.
