Risers and Fallers QB
by Cecil Lammey

Back in early February I released my rankings for the offensive skill positions. Well, the scouting combine in Indy, plus more film study has me re-vamping my rankings. I will take a look at the top 10 from each position and compare them to my pre-combine rankings (previous ranking in parenthesis).

First up, the Quarterbacks!

Post-combine QBs

1 . Matt Ryan, Boston College (1)

2 . Brian Brohm, Louisville (2)

3 . Chad Henne, Michigan (3)

4 . Josh Johnson, San Diego (4)

5 . Joe Flacco, Delaware (8)

6 . Andre Woodson (5)

7 . Dennis Dixon, Oregon (7)

8 . John David Booty, USC (6)

9 . Erik Ainge, Tennessee (9)

10 . Kevin O'Connell, San Diego State (11)

So 1st question, why didn't my top 4 change?

Matt Ryan chose not to work out at the combine, but that won't hurt him in the eyes of scouts and GMs. Brian Brohm has been the topic of hot debates on various websites, and even with a sub-par senior season I've still seen enough from Brohm to have him 2nd in my rankings. Chad Henne has sometimes looked like Jeckyll and Hyde at the QB position. Which Chad will show up on gameday? Henne showed me at the Senior Bowl that he is ready for the big time, and is taking this transition very seriously.

Everyone and their mother knows of my love for Josh Johnson. Some people didn't like the way the ball came out of Josh's hands in Indy, but as our good friend Russ Lande from the Sporting News noted, he's never threw to any of these receivers before and teams already knew they would have to work on some of his throwing mechanics. I'd like to rank Josh higher, but he is a project - a project with unlimited upside.

Why did Joe Flacco jump 3 spots from 8 to 5?

Flacco looks the part, and in Indy he had a very positive buzz around him. He was too low in my initial rankings based on his potential, and I had to correct that. However, there is an interesting quote from an unnamed QB coach at the combine. This coach compared him to Andrew Walter and John Navarre. Ouch! Here's the quote: "He? a big, tall, long release guy," the QBs coach said. "Fundamentally he? pretty good. But I watched him take about a million sacks on tape. He couldn't move around. What? going to happen in the NFL? Just like...Andrew Walter. He's going to be out of the league in another year. Do you want him?" Source: Chicago Sun Times

So there's plenty of factors to consider when evaluating Joe Flacco. I love the arm strength, but the lack of mobility is a serious concern for me. That's why I have Flacco in my top 5, but not any higher.

Why did Andre Woodson fall one spot?

Andre Woodson chose not to work out at the combine, add this to an inconsistent performance at the Senior Bowl, and you have a draft stock that is falling. Some people are wondering if the offense around Woodson (Burton, Tamme, Little, S. Johnson) made him look better than he is. He did bounce back a little with a good pro day, but he in now tagged as more of a project than previously believed. I still like Andre (yes, slow delivery and all) but feel that he will fall in the draft.

What about the rest of the rankings, including Kevin O'Connell?

Dennis Dixon stays at the 7 spot. Whatever team drafts him is getting a ton of value if he can stay healthy. John David Booty falls from 6 to 8 because he is good but not great. He was in front of Dixon before the combine, and now falls behind him. When I moved Andre Woodson in his 6 spot, I just couldn't bring myself to move Dixon any further. Looking at more tape I am never disappointed in what Dixon brings to the table. Again, all of this is conditional on Dixon being healthy.

Erik Ainge is a little like JDB in the fact that he is solid, yet unspectacular. I have seen more inconsistency from Ainge than I have from Booty. Matt Flynn falls out of my top 10, and Kevin O'Connell breaks in. O'Connell impressed many scouts and GMs with a very solid performance at the combine. Watching Kevin at the 2008 Shrine Game it's obvious that he has more athleticism than one would expect from a QB his size. I think coaches need to re-work his throwing motion, because a QB that tall can't have his passes batted down as much as O'Connell did during his time with the Aztecs. With improved mechanics and decision making Kevin could turn himself into a solid backup for years to come.

That does it for the QBs, look out for my RB discussion tomorrow. My new rankings will debut soon!
