Cover 2: Brian Leonard, RB, Rutgers
by Sigmund Bloom and Sean Baca

The NFLDraftguys staff is going to duke it out over the question of whether the most enigmatic players in the 2007 draft class will become their best or worse case scenario right up until the 32 NFL franchises show us their take on those players in Radio City Music Hall on April 28 and 29.

High Side by Sigmund Bloom

Brian Leonard has one of the more underwhelming highlight reels of any RB in the 2007 class, but that won't stop him from being a valuable offensive weapon in the NFL. Leonard lead blocks like a fullback, catches the ball like a scatback, and runs like a classic tailback who can answer the call on 1st and 10 or 4th and inches. That versatility will give his offensive coordinator the advantage of deception, keeping the defense guessing as to how Leonard will be used on any particular play. Leonard's toughness and smarts just augment his "swiss army knife" game. His "do whatever it takes" mentality helped put the Rutgers program on the map, and he's sure to rub off on his teammates in the NFL. Leonard might lack flash, but he'll still be a jewel for the team that calls his name on April 28. I'll be shocked if he lasts past the 2nd round.

Low Side by Sean Baca

The classic questions asked of a fullback trying to play halfback - agility and elusiveness - are certainly applicable in the case of Brian Leonard. Leonard is stiff in the hips and not very hard to find on a football field. He does run well downhill, and does not shy away from contact. These can be considered both a positive and a negative for Brian. He runs a little too upright, and even though he has great hands, his lack of elusiveness will hamper him in the open field. I believe that he will be a GREAT short yardage back, but the question is "Where does that put his draft stock?"
