Josh Buchanan covers "pro hopefuls" for www.d2football.com, and helped select players for the Las Vegas All-American Classic and the Magnolia Gridiron Classic, and he was kind enough to share his small school prospect interviews with us.
SS Steve Tate, Utah
Josh: What are your current measurables such as height, weight, 40, and bench reps?
Steve: 5' 11", 200 lbs., 4.62, 19 reps
Josh: Why did you choose Utah coming out of high school?
Steve: I always grew up watching the University of Utah and dreamed of playing football for them. My grandpa played running back for them in the 1940's, so it felt like the place I needed to be.
Josh: How did your pro day go?
Steve: It went well. I trained for 10 weeks to get my body ready for the workouts to perform to my absolute best ability. I always want to do better, but I'm satisfied with my results.
Josh: Do you have any private workouts set up?
Steve: No.
Josh: What do you feel are your biggest strengths on the field?
Steve: Tackling. I led my team in tackles for two consecutive seasons, 102 and 103 tackles respectively. I play my best when I'm down in the box and blitzing. I also believe that I have a great football IQ.
Josh: What are your biggest weaknesses on the field?
Steve: My man to man pass coverage on Wide Receivers. In college I was always assigned to Tight Ends, but I need to comfortable covering a #2 slot receiver.
Josh: Did you feel snubbed by not getting an invite to the combine?
Steve: I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. I didn't dwell on it too much, because I was focused on proving myself at our pro day. It motivates me even more to prove the doubters wrong.
Josh: What do you feel you bring to a team?
Steve: Leadership and toughness. I was a three year starter and captain of my college football team. I was a walk on that had to prove myself to my college coaches and team. I am a blue collared athlete that will do whatever it takes to see my team succeed. I will do anything!
Josh: What do you feel is the toughest thing about playing safety?
Steve: The preparation on the field and in the film room. Safeties should know the assignments of all 11 players on the field. We are responsible if there is a blown assignment on defense.
Josh: Do you have any players on your team who you feel will be NFL prospects next year?
Steve: Quarterback Brian Johnson. If he can stay healthy he will be playing somewhere.
Josh: Do you have any expectations on draft day such as a round or team?
Steve: eggars can't be choosers. It's been a dream of mine to play in the NFL. I don't care where I am playing or what round I am picked, I just want to play football in the NFL.
Josh: What are your future goals outside of playing in the NFL?
Steve: My main goal is to continue my family and support them. I am married with a 2 year old son and a baby girl on the way, my wife's due in July. I plan on being a financial advisor and coaching high school football.
