Josh Buchanan covers "pro hopefuls" for www.d2football.com, and helped select players for the Las Vegas All-American Classic and the Magnolia Gridiron Classic, and he was kind enough to share his small school prospect interviews with us.
WR Davone Bess , Hawaii
Josh: What are your current measurables such as height, weight, 40, and bench reps?
Davone: I weighed in at 190 the other day. I am 5'9 3/4. Last time we ran the 40 I ran a 4.53 and 4.54. We haven't done bench since I left the combine. I did 14 reps but they said I didn't go all the way on one.
Josh: Why did you choose Hawaii coming out of high school?
Davone: Various reasons, wanted to get away and a perfect situation to come play right away. They had a lot of seniors so I could play the next year.
Josh: What factored in your decision to come out early?
Davone: Basically just ready to take on the next stage in my life. I had three great productive years in Hawaii . I was healthy and I met with my coach and he thought it was a good chance for me to come out. Those three factors pretty much sealed the deal for me.
Josh: Where have you been training?
Davone: API in Arizona.
Josh: What have you worked on the most while training?
Davone: Technique in the 40 honestly. That was one of the only knocks on him. Just trying my hardest to get that down.
Josh: Who else was training with you?
Davone: Matt Ryan, Jake Long, Steve Slaton, Limas Sweed, Vernon Gholston, Lavelle Hawkins, and Justin King.
Josh: What do you feel are your biggest strengths on the field?
Davone: Just my ability to inspire people around me. I am a team player and very unselfish. I am willing to lay a block downfield to help my teammates. I think I lead by example as far as working hard. I want to do things to better myself and not because I have to you know.
Josh: What are your biggest weaknesses on the field?
Davone: Right now probably my route running and just being a lot more patient and knowing when to break at a certain time. I tend to break too early or break too late.
Josh: Do you feel you are a capable blocker yet or is that something you want to work on?
Davone: I feel like I am a good blocker.
Josh: You have had a highly productive career. Was it a surprise to you or did you expect your individual and team success when you came in as a freshman?
Davone: It did not surprise me one bit. When I first got there I met with Colt and we clicked instantly. The first day he got there we threw balls and I invited him over with the boys at my house. He came but he couldn't make it in the house because he and I stayed on the porch and had a long talk. We talked about what we wanted to do for ourselves and the program. Last season we found ourselves tripping out and all of this was what we imagined.
Josh: Do you have any players on your team who you feel will be NFL prospects next year?
Davone: We have a young team but some guys who could probably come out early and contribute if they mature and play well. I know for a fact our outside linebacker Adam Leonard, Solomon Eliminian, corner Ryan Mouton, and a few others.
Josh: Which teams have shown the most interest in you so far?
Davone: You know what I felt like the combine went well and I had a good interview with a lot of teams. It is kind of hard to tell because I felt I did well in everything. I got a good vibe with a lot of them. You never know.
Josh: Do you have any expectations on draft day such as a round or team?
Davone: When I got my grade from the advisory board based off my tape I had I gotten a mid to late 2nd round grade. That pretty much made my decision to come out. Other than that I have no idea man. I am just happy to be where I am now. It is definitely a dream come true. If it is in God’s will I will go as high as possible.
Josh: What are your future goals outside of playing in the NFL?
Davone: Right now I haven't gotten my degree yet. I am two semesters away from getting it in communications. I want to go in TV and radio broadcasting and take it in the next level. I want to do what you are doing right now and interview people and get feedback with certain players.
