Josh Buchanan covers "pro hopefuls" for www.d2football.com, and helped select players for the Las Vegas All-American Classic and the Magnolia Gridiron Classic, and he was kind enough to share his small school prospect interviews with us.
FB Jerome Felton, Furman
Josh: What is your current height, weight and workout numbers?
Jerome: I am 5'11 3/4, I weigh 248 pounds, bench press 415, hang clean 350 pounds, and last time I squatted I had 520. I haven't run 40s yet but we will be running them shortly. My vertical is 35 1/2 inches.
Josh: Did you play any other sports in high school besides football?
Jerome: Nope.
Josh: What do you feel are your strengths and weaknesses?
Jerome: I think in terms of strengths I have good vision for a fullback. If you are looking at me as a running back I am powerful and a goal line runner. I usually don't get tackled by the first person. Before last season my main goal was endurance. If you look back at my freshman year I was a blocker and mainly had to hit the linebackers. I have been asked to be a main weapon as my career has gone on so I want to get in better shape so I can carry the ball 20 times a game and still have the endurance to be a dominant blocker. I can block people on the edge and I think I am pretty good in pass protection.
Josh: Do you like to block, catch passes or run the ball the most?
Jerome: Just being honest right now I like running the ball but at the same time if I went to NFL and all they wanted me to do is block and catch the ball I would be fine with that. My main goal is to get to the NFL so I will do whatever they want me to do. I am willing to do anything. Like I said before I feel like I can be a team's power back and be a fullback too. Most people are going to the two-back set with a power and speed back and I feel I can be that power back.
Josh: Who is a player to look out for this year that most people don't know about?
Jerome: I would say Andrew Jones but I think a lot of people know about him. If not for him I would say R.J. Webb. He is a wide receiver and will be a sophomore next year. I would say either him or William Middleton.
Josh: You have been a Walter Payton Award Finalist and All-American during your career. What do the awards mean to you or do you even get into the media hype?
Jerome: I broke a good amount of records last year but I don't really think about it. I am glad I am getting them. I don't really pay attention to the awards. I work to be the best and I don't think about awards. Every time I run and workout in my mind I am doing this to be the best.
Josh: People are comparing you to Jerome Bettis. Do you think that is fair?
Jerome: Yeah I think it is fair. I can see where people get it. I think we are alike in ways but in ways we aren't. I think I am a little faster but he has better feet. We are very similar in power. He has never had to block much so I think I could block better than him. I am not better in him at this point in my career but I do feel I could be better in these things as my career goes on. He is the type I have modeled myself after. I probably want to run people over more than he did after he developed his speed and had been in the NFL a while. I like the comparisons and obviously he was one of my idols growing up so I feel honored to be mentioned with him.
Josh: What are your team and individual goals for this year?
Jerome: For team goals I want to win every game. We expect to win championships out right. I don't really have certain numbers but I do think about it every once in a while. My main goals are to lead this team and be somebody people can look at. In terms of numbers I have done that in the past but this year I am not going to do that. I just want to be dominant and be somebody my team can look to in crunch time.
Josh: In your opinion what do you bring to the game that most backs out there don't bring?
Jerome: Just a combination of everything. My biggest thing is power because I am a power runner. I really do feel I have an elite type of power because of how hard I run. When it comes to power I had not seen a lot of guys. I have looked at big backs and I compare myself to others when I watch them play. I think I am one of the most powerful running backs in the entire country.
Josh: Who is the best player you have faced in your career?
Jerome: Probably the best player I faced is H.B. Blades from Pittsburgh . He is a physical linebacker. The best playmaker I played against was Chad Nkang.
Josh: Who is the best player on your team?
Jerome: Andrew Jones, our linebacker.
Josh: What are your future goals?
Jerome: My goals are to be in the NFL and have a good career. I want to venture out and do other things. I would like to do other things in terms of business and in the community. Football is something I look at that can provide me with opportunities I want to take care of my family and help other people. I like to be a role model and be someone who can go out and do things for people. Football is my goal but I could be a lawyer or sports agent and go from there.
