Many scouts have already left so only 15-20 scouts remained today. It was very cold in the morning practice but a little less windy from previous days.
The Texas team had a very laid back practice. The only group that you could really gauge talent from was special teams.
LS Chase Norton of Dixie State was erratic and his snaps were also slow. He lacks the skills for the NFL. Probably a AFL type.
The Nation squad took the field in warmer conditions later in the afternoon and did a lot more work.
Here is a look at some positions:
QB
Nick Hill, Southern Illinois - lacks arm strength to deliver the long ball, decent ball speed on short routes.
Taylor Tharp, Boise State - lacks accuracy on fade routes, something you have to hit in the NFL.
Blake Mitchell, South Carolina - best of the group, takes less wasted steps in the pocket and seems the most coached up of the group.
TE
Tyson DeVree, Colorado - athletic player who has room to add weight, natural hands, and very deadly over the middle of the field. Just finds ways to get open. Needs to work on blocking though.
OL
OT Demetrius Bell, NW State - quick hands, crosses feet at times and is inconsistent with technique.
OG Kerry Brown, App State - impressive in pass blocking in both one on one and in team drills.
DL
DE Vincent Redd, Liberty - 3-4 OLB type but doesn? make plays. Observers were not very impressed.
DB
CB Michael Hinton, Mankato State - physical players who loves to press receivers.
S Corey Lynch, App State - hard hitter who flashes instincts. Had 2 blocked field goals today.
After the Nation practice the Texas players came out and went one on one with Nation players and then scrimmaged them. Each team had 2 offensive drives. Here are notes from the pit and scrimmage:
Matchups
Frank Morton vs. Adam Spieker - Morton beat him with speed.
Vernon Bryant vs. Ben Poynter - most embarrassing one of all with Bryant pancaking him.
Nate Garner vs. Rudolph Hardie - Garner won putting him on the ground. Garner showed solid knee bend in his 2nd time in the pit.
George Chukwu vs. Eric Scott - Chukwu killed him with a spin move.
Antonio Reynolds vs. Carlton Medder - Reynolds won easily.
Jason Shirley vs. Shannon Boatman - Shirley won with the bull rush.
Thaddeus Coleman vs. Eric Bakhtiari - Coleman won, using size to overpower him.
Chester Adams vs. George Chukwu - Adams won showing good knee bend, quick hands, and quick feet.
Marcus Dixon, Hampton - just tries to punch opponents and needs to develop more moves.
Scrimmage
Tyson DeVree of Colorado was once again showing good hands and getting open.
Texas team was very vocal, physical, and hitting hard.
Xavier Omon was dominant. He was tough to bring down and showed good vision.
Antwaun Molden was the best corner showing physical play and bringing all the tools. He has had a good buzz from observers this week.
Frank Morton was making plays. He has a buzz from observers after showing he can disrupt the backfield.
The QB play was average at best.
Conclusion
Texas team seems to want the game more. This should make for an interesting game. Both teams have good talent and have players who can fly.
