2008 Texas vs. Nation - Day 2 Texas Practice Report
by Sigmund Bloom, Cecil Lammey, Marc Faletti & Josh Buchanan

There were crazy wind gusts in the Sun Bowl today that made the passing game very difficult, and also made watching practice a challenge. It's tough to judge QBs and WRs in this weather.

QB

Bret Meyer, Iowa State

Showed better athleticism running the football when the play broke down. Wind affected a lot of his passes, but he also showed good touch. He is a football player, but probably not enough accuracy to stay at QB in the NFL.

Daniel Polk, Midwestern State

Got more WR work, seems to have the quicks and deep speed to get a shot in the NFL as an UFA.

Caleb Hanie, Colorado State

Defense was all over his bootleg today.

Adam Tafralis, San Jose State

Still showing athleticism moving around well in the pocket, and threw well on the run, but wind also affected his accuracy.

RB

Xavier Omon, NW Missouri State

Looked good between the tackles once again, showed decent hands - but the defense wrapped him up a little better and he was not breaking as many tackles. Good lower body strength.

Alley Broussard, Missouri Southern

Good power, good hands on a swing pass out of the backfield, however, defense blew him up in the backfield a couple times - although its partially due to missed blocks. Runs too high at times, but finds the hole and hits it hard. Would be nice to see him block some with his size - could be a FB/RB tweener.

James Johnson, Kansas State

Shows good vision but runs too high and is purely a developmental guy at this point.

FB

Chris Brown, Tennessee

Looked great as a receiver. Was running receiver routes split out wide - including a flag play that was covered by the safety - shocking to see a FB naturally run a WR route well.

WR

Lance Leggett, Miami

Looking spectacular before he got hurt - beat his man on a great double move and caught the back half of the ball on a deep pass on the play he got hurt. Generally getting wide open and making the catch. Definitely handles the low pass well. If he adds some bulk, he should have NFL upside.

Danny Amendola, Texas Tech

Seemed to be getting frustrated by the wind and QB play, but was still running great routes and showing great hands and body control. Quicker than advertised. On one ball that got hung up in the wind, Amendola stopped playing after Steven Williams picked the ball off. On a WR screen, he took a jab step in and the ball was thrown too low - he was demonstrably unhappy with the throw. Showed an elusive first step and even a stiff arm at times.

Jeron Harvey, Houston

A little inconsistent, but made nice adjustments on wind-blown passes. Might lack the quickness and speed to stick in the NFL despite nice hands and a big frame. Slow in and out of his breaks, but ran crisp routes.

Jaymar Johnson, Jackson State

Star of the WRs. Ran a perfect double move - made DB think he was going inside and once the DB opened his hips, Johnson took the outside and caught what would have been a TD. Ran a 15 yard crossing route where the safety was coming in hard, knew he was going to get jacked and made the catch and took the hit - no fear over the middle is impressive for a 176 lb WR. Played with a "my ball" mentality all day. Good natural hands catcher. Quick feet.

Joe West, UTEP

Ran nice routes, made nice catches. Stood out after blending in on Tuesday. Still rounding routes a bit.

TE

Matt Mulligan, Maine

6036 264 at late weigh in with 8 5/8 hands and 31 ? arms - took place of Kolo Kapanui (West Texas A&M). Good hands. Solid route runner with good breaks in his routes.

Jake Sears, UTEP

Made some plays but is slow off the line of scrimmage.

Mike Peterson, NW Missouri St

Had a fantastic day with several good catches over the middle, including one deep ball. Started in, cut out against Darien Williams and made the catch. Williams could not turn fast enough to get where Peterson was going.

OL

Brandon Keith, OT, Northern Iowa

Still the most dominant Texas OL, generally blotting out his opponent in both one on ones and game action. Ideal tackle size. Keeps a good base in pass pro and uses his hands well. Almost always starts well but needs be more consistent finishing.

Matt Roan, C, Southern Utah

Played some LG - crosses his feet at times and needs coaching on that. Hands are also too wide at times, but has some nice tools to work with. Can also long snap, so with tackle/guard/center versatility, could stick on a roster.

Nate Garner, OT, Arkansas

Seemed to start well with a solid base, but doesn't move his feet and gets beat because of it. Looks out of shape and gets overextended at times because his feet are so close together - which causes him to lose his balance.

Brock Pasteur, OT, Stephen F Austin

Not very athletic, inconsistent. Unorthodox stance with sideways left foot. Tries to use brute strength, won't work in the NFL.

Adam Hill, C, UL-Monroe

Another one of the best OL on the Texas squad, wins most battles. Recovering nicely on Chukwu's surprise club move.

Shannon Boatman, OG, Florida State

Adam Spieker, C, Missouri

Struggled with swim move from Maurice Murray.

DL

Eric Bakhtiari, DE, San Diego

Too small, lacks NFL tools. Stats (20 sacks this year) look like product of lower competition more than ability at this point.

Antonio Reynolds, DE, Tennessee

Flashed good speed moves - beat Brock Pasteur with his speed and one move. Showed that he has moves too.

Jason Shirley, DT, Fresno State

Huge body, but thin calves - underachiever with low motor - either very good or very bad. Got neutralized, but also flashed good speed and moves for his size when he wants to.

Henry Smith, DT, Texas A&M

Consistently pushed his opponent back in the pit.

George Chukwu, DT, Rice

Great penetration in game situations.

Xavier Mitchell, DE, Tennessee

Late arrival - 6025 265 at late weigh in 9 7/8 hands, 32 7/8 arms.

DB

Kyle Ward, CB, UL-Lafayette

Flashed skills and tools - got some buzz from spectators.

Steven Williams, CB, Harvard

Nice ball skills on INT when ball hung up. Showed good cover skills - has decent speed, good hands, adjusts well to ball in the air. You can see why he was an FCS all-american.

Darien Williams, S, Oklahoma

After getting burned by Peterson, a couple plays later, Peterson faked the out and came back inside and Williams had the route covered - easily breaking up the pass.
