2008 Texas vs. Nation - Day 2 Nation Practice Report
by Sigmund Bloom, Cecil Lammey, Marc Faletti & Josh Buchanan

QB

Nick Hill, Southern Illinois

Erratic - passes were all over the place, good mobility. Flashed decent pocket presence, average arm - like other QBs, just blended in.

Blake Mitchell, South Carolina

Looked good at times, arm strength is apparent, accurate in the pocket, but if he's forced to move, he loses accuracy and velocity.

Taylor Tharp, Boise State

Didn't stand out for good or bad reasons - doesn't wow you and struggles with longer passes, average arm strength.

Omar Haugabook, Troy

Got work at WR, lots of coaching. Looked great on deep routes, especially the flag, inconsistent hands on shorter routes. Needs polish, but worth bringing in as a UFA type to see if he develops.

RB

Louis Rankin, Washington

Showed decent straight line speed on a long TD run, but had a HUGE hole to do it. Looked good as a receiver, works well in space. Good vision, good cutback ability, sees play progression well. third down back potential.

Rodney Kinlaw, Penn State

Bad fumble, and did not go after it.

Tim Hightower, Richmond

Flashy cutbacks, but otherwise ineffective.

Allen Ervin, Lambuth (TN)

Showed decent speed once he got revved up, and good vision to find the cutback, but otherwise average, and not much of an inside runner.

FB

Carl Stewart, Auburn

Showed good leg drive - probably a RB/FB combo type. Was hard to bring down and did not go down on initial contact.

WR

Pierre Garcon, Mount Union

Uses his feet to find a dead space in coverage - good field awareness and creates cushion between him and the corner. Had one easy drop.

Darrell Blackman, North Carolina State

Had two good deep catches, caught a ball falling back at the sidelines, showing great concentration securing the catch while falling backwards. Also had nice tiptoe to get in on the sidelines. Did have one easy drop. looks like a natural return man.

Patrick Carter, Louisville

Inconsistent - made some good catches over the middle, but on deep routes, he lost the ball - ball tracking needs work. Smooth and fluid and flashed natural hands, but did not do it on every play.

Bruce Hocker, Duquesne

Good size, hands, and balance - lacks quickness. Possession WR.

Edward Williams, Lane

Struggling - adjusted well to the high ball. Showed little crispness in and out of breaks, little suddenness off the line of scrimmage. Did beat a DB deep, but has been average at best this week and needs to finish with a big game. Has tools, but isn't flashing them.

Marcel Reece, Washington

Looked good in the flat, showing sprinter's speed. Squared to QB and opened his shoulders to present good target. Did drop one pass that was a little low.

TE

Tyson Devree, Colorado

Nice pass catching threat getting open across the middle - hauled in the catch fairly well. All about effort. Had one dropped pass on a sideline route, but still showed outstanding hustle on every play. Does a good job finding soft spots in the zone.

Matt Sherry, Villanova

Caught a pass over the middle. He knew he was going to get hit and still made the catch. Solid as a blocker with a decent burst off the ball and good initial contact.

OL

Eric Scott, C, Kentucky

Gave ground too easily in pass pro - not getting beat but QB would have to move. Not keeping the pocket intact.

Isaiah Wiggins, C, Illinois State

Settled down today. Much more comfortable as a center.

Chester Adams, OG, Georgia

Best guard here, great feet, great strong base, great use of hands. Put Foster on the ground.

Thaddeus Coleman, OT, Mississippi Valley State

DOMINANT - really pumped up today. Exalted a DE "Don't bullrush me" after he stoned him. Was even coaching up his teammates - which is amazing considering he didn't have an OL coach in college. Squashed some of his opponents and showed great feet. Towers above his teammates. Bodyslammed two defenders and got excited about throwing opponents to the ground. Quicker than expected. Has put on 20 pounds since the Spring

Carnell Stewart, OT, LSU

Had trouble with speed rushers, but got to second level well in run blocking. Also best return man of the group when the OL got to return kickoffs. When he did win one on ones, he often got his opponent on the ground.

Carlton Medder, OT, Florida

Stood up Foster, which no one could do yesterday.

Dylan Thiry, OT, Northwestern

Not bad at pulling, neutralized defenders at first, but plays with his feet too close together on the move and fell a few times.

James Blair, OG, Western Michigan

Showed great feet and strength again.

Kerry Brown, OT, Appalachian State

Never gave up, even when he was beaten initially. Played with a great mean streak and moved very well from the guard position. Very aggressive on running plays. Delivers strong punch. Content to ride speed rushers outside instead of cutting them off. Beat Douzable, and Coleman and others told him to watch out for the club - Brown absorbed a stunning blow and still stopped Douzable.

Kyle Cunningham, OG, La-Monroe

Held his own in the pit and sometimes showed a very strong base.

Demetrius Bell, OT, Northwestern State

Still showing only flashes - NFL LT potential, but needs a lot of work. Not playing nasty enough. Played too high at times, needs to anchor better in pass pro - did not do that consistently. Also very aggressive in running game.

DL

Ervin Baldwin, DE, Michigan

Speed rush is getting better, but still looks like only a pass rush specialist.

Eric Foster, DT, Rutgers

Looked good on speed rushes, and initial quickness was still outstanding, but got taken to the ground easily when blockers got both hands on him. Drew double teams today. Players seemed to figure him out a little bit more today, but still showed flashes of dominance. Not as impressive in game action playing DE vs. the run.

Josh Thompson, DT, Auburn

Showed surprising initial quickness, but still completely stopped when the blocker got underneath him.

Trevor Scott, DE, Buffalo

Showed a good rip move, doesn't have the bulk to contend with bigger OTs. May be better served by a move to 3-4 OLB. Too thin hipped to hang on the line.

Frank Morton, DT, Tulane

Showed decent quickness, beat Eric Scott with an initial move.

LB

Steve Octavien, Nebraska

Covered a ton of ground in pass coverage. Was also willing to fill the hole.

Ronnie McCullough, Bethune Cookman

Great pass rush from the weak side, but sometime gets lost in traffic.

Joe Mays, North Dakota State

Very active today, showed good quickness. Was all over the field. Vocal leader and he's not afraid to get through trash and take on the block. Also very good at shedding blocks.

Danny Lansanah, Connecticut

Thumper - good run stuffer.

Nick Watkins, Clemson

Good in space and on the chase, but will only work as a cover 2 WLB.

Vince Redd, Liberty

Dropped into coverage on a zone blitz when Molden did a corner blitz from the slot and dropped an easy INT, but was smooth getting into his zone. Relied on speed rush a little too much in the pit.

DB

Kareem Moore, S, Nicholls State

Made plays in run and pass defense and closed well in coverage.

Henti Beard, S, Hampton

Turf toe injury from the season flared up and forced him out of the practice.

Corey Lynch, S, Appalachian State

DOMINATED in FG blocking. Blocked multiple kicks, showed an unstoppable swim move. Even when he didn't block the kick he broke through the line. He's not in as good of shape as he was during the season (took three weeks off to get married) - but you could still see flashes of how he played during the season, just not on every play.

Antwuan Molden, CB, Eastern Kentucky

Blanketed his man all day - even drawing an offensive pass interference from Garcon when he was in better position for the catch.

Matt Harper, S, Oregon

Good presence in run support.

Dowayne Davis, S, Syracuse

5'11 200 at late weigh in 9 hands and 33 1/4 arms - took place of Brian Witherspoon (Stillman). Very active in run support, sideline to sideline hitter. Very vocal and had a good all around day.
