2008 Texas vs. Nation - Day 1 Texas Practice Report
by Sigmund Bloom, Cecil Lammey, Marc Faletti & Josh Buchanan

QB

Bret Meyer, Iowa State

Sporadic accuracy, might be a little keyed up - showed the athleticism to make a possible position switch in the pros. Did put good touch on the fly route.

Daniel Polk, Midwestern State

Got some work at WR - looked natural catching the deep ball showed nice straight line speed on a go route, scouts want to see him at RB.

Caleb Hanie, Colorado State

Showed good wheels on a bootleg, otherwise was inconsistent.

Adam Tafralis, San Jose State

When he looks good, he looks really good - accurate ball with good velocity - but sometimes is way off. Does have good mobility when the play breaks down - which is a good thing because he holds on to the ball too long too often.

RB

James Johnson, Kansas State

Runs too upright for a small back, only NFL future is as a situational back.

Xaiver Omon, NW Missouri State

Great receiver out of the backfield, including one catch over the middle which was a little behind him - he knew he was going to get drilled and unflinchingly made the catch. Showed great cuts at speed and vision all day. Tough to bring down - doesn't go down on initial contact, and carried tacklers on many runs.

Adrian Smith, Bethel (TN)

Too indecisive, some fumble issues. Has quick feet, but thinks too much. Didn't seem like we were seeing the real Smith today.

Alley Broussard, Missouri Southern

Won many collisions and showed the ruggedness to run inside - good power at the point of attack, and good natural hands catcher out of the backfield.

FB

Chris Brown, Tennessee

Runs too upright - must be something about the name. good soft hands on a catch while stretched out low and took a hit.

Chris Alexander, Texas A&M

Showed great natural hands.

WR

Jayson Foster, Georgia Southern

One of the quickest players in the game, also very fast, but needs to play more physical.

Lance Leggett, Miami

Most of the time, looked unnatural making a play on the ball, some drops - caught two passes that were mere inches off the ground, but did not fight the DB in close quarters.

Danny Amendola, Texas Tech

Showed terrific natural hands, great ability to throttle down and burst out of breaks, outstanding body control, good routes with good footwork and no false steps, quicker than advertised. Made up for lack of physical gifts with heady play - really looked like a clone of Wes Welker.

Jeron Harvey, Houston

Used his long arms to pluck a tough pass out of the air, long strider who is not blazing fast, but is faster than he looks. Sharp cuts on his routes. NFL body without a doubt, but lacks NFL speed. Needs to run under 4.6 in workouts.

Jaymar Johnson, Jackson State

Caught most everything as a natural hands catcher, including passes over his head. As fast as Foster, among the fastest in the game.

TE

Jake Sears, UTEP

Made a few nice catches including one over the shoulder catch that he followed by breaking a Brian Bonner tackle - would have been a long TD.

Matt Mulligan, Maine

Stayed late with Robert Killebrew to work on one on one blocking.

OL

Brandon Keith, OT, Northern Iowa

Won most of his battles, raw but strong with tree trunk thighs, and has a stunning punch. Put a few guys on their face and another on his back. Looking as good as Chad Reinhart, another Northern Iowa OL who we watched in Mobile last week.

Matt Roan, C, Southern Utah

Not strong enough to handle bull rushes, but has good feet, should get better as the week goes on.

Nate Garner, OT, Arkansas

Needs to lose some weight, looked a little slow at times - unlike Felton, the Arkansas OL at the Senior Bowl who also did not impress at the weigh in, but got results once practice started.

Brock Pasteur, OT, Stephen F Austin

Needs to use his hands, needs to be quicker with his hands.

Adam Hill, C, UL-Monroe

Stump-like physique, wasn't mauling, but wasn't getting dominated either.

Shannon Boatman, OG, Florida State

Good use of hands, but sometimes gives too much ground.

Adam Spieker, C, Missouri

Played too high, lacks strength - needs to get stronger.

DL

Eric Bakhtiari, DE, San Diego

Needs to learn some moves, but showed good quickness off the ball - lowers his head sometimes, needs to keep his head up.

Antonio Reynolds, DE, Tennessee

Consistently knifed into the backfield and blew up plays.

Jason Shirley, DT, Fresno State

When he got leverage, he pushed back the OL like he was on ice skates. Neutralized easily when he played too high.

Henry Smith, DT, Texas A&M

Bulldozed Pat Schwenke (West Texas A&M) in the pit.

George Chukwu, DT, Rice

Good spin and chuck move. Beat Adam Hill both times he faced him. Had scouts talking.

Maurice Murray, DT, NM State

Tree trunk thighs, but needs to lose weight in the gut. Average today.

LB

Rodrick Johnson, Oklahoma State

Met Broussard in the hole and told him he'd "be there all day," although Broussard seemed to get the better of the initial collision - Johnson stayed with the play and stopped the play.

Robert Killebrew, Texas

Outstanding play in coverage on a wheel route, stayed with the RB and then broke up the pass calmly when it arrived.

Jerrell Freeman, Mary Hardin Baylor

Made some plays in coverage and showed great athleticism all day - has a nose for the football. Has room to add weight and is very fast. Looked very smooth in his backpedal.

Jeremy Jones, UTEP

Stopped Broussard behind the line of scrimmage, looked great in coverage, able to turn his hips and run with tight ends - did better in game action than drills, looked great against the run.

Demario Pleasant, Oklahoma

Looked stiff in his backpedal.

DB

Jerrid Gaines, CB, Miami (OHIO)

Mirrored receivers in coverage very well, and showed recovery speed when he bit on a pump fake.

Brian Bonner, S, TCU

Very vocal, liked to pump up his teammates.

Darien Williams, S, Oklahoma

Seems to fly to the football, always involved in the play.
