1. Miami
Glenn Dorsey
Alternate: Darren McFadden
After watching Beck play reasonably well against the Steelers, I think the Dolphins may have something in him, so no QB pick here. Their offensive line hasn't played all that bad and Jake Long isn't quite a super stud LT. So the Fins take the guy that's shown a lot of professionalism, playing through injury and playing well most of the season. Their d-line (and entire defense) is O-L-D. Whether they play a 3-4 or a 4-3, it doesn't matter. Dorsey's a stud.
McFadden is a definite option if Brown doesn't appear recovered from the knee injury.
2. New York Jets
Jake Long
Alternate: Vernon Gholston
I'm not sure who would play which tackle position, but bookends of Ferguson and Long would go a long way toward improving a tepid offense. They may even get their money's worth out of Thomas Jones.
Gholston's 13 sacks would be helpful to a team that currently has only 19 on the season (only six teams have less).
3. St. Louis
Chris Long
Alternate: James Laurinaitis
It would behoove the Rams to somehow get Jake Long unless they want to see $65 million worth of QB flushed down the toilet. Since he's gone in this mock... Rumors are flying that the Rams may switch to a 3-4 next year. If so, Long would be a terrific fit, even if he is a bit undersized for the 3-4. Even if they don't, he's a terrific fit. Teamed with Adam Carriker, they could be a force. For the 35th year in a row, the Rams go DL in the first.
Laurinitis would allow Witherspoon to move back outside where he's probably more well suited.
4. New England (from San Francisco)
Vernon Gholston
Alternate: Darren McFadden
The rich get richer. He would allow the Patriots to be very creative with their linebacking corps. Gholston is a monster and would help any of these teams in the top 10. Picking the Pats pick is like picking winning lottery numbers. You just have to guess.
Regarding McFadden - What if opposing defenses had to respect the run? As it is, the Pats use the pass to set up the pass.
5. Atlanta
Brian Brohm
Alternate: Darren McFadden
McFadden is certainly a temptation, but backs are easier to find than franchise QBs. Normally it would be a coin flip between Brohm and Ryan, but given Petrino's familiarity with Brohm, this seems a no-brainer.
McFadden would be the back that Petrino covets.
6. Oakland
Darren McFadden
Alternate: Sedrick Ellis
Just like the Vikes lucked into AP, the Raiders luck into DMac. While he's not quite the talent that AP is (but then again, who is?) McFadden will certainly help take the pressure off next year's starter - Jamarcus Russell.
The leagues worst run defense could certainly use the help Ellis would bring.
7. Cincinnati
Sedrick Ellis
Alternate: James Laurinaitis/Dan Connor
Another obvious fit, IMO. Ellis has played really well and could be the Pac 10 Defensive player of the year. Cincinnati has the 25th ranked run defense.
The Bengals have been killed by injuries to their linebackers this year. If they can't come back healthy, either Laurinaitis or Connor would add a lot of talent to the corps.
8. Kansas City
Jeff Otah, OT - Pittsburgh
Alternate: Malcolm Jenkins
Otah is the fast riser on the draft boards. Really, I can't see the Cheifs going anywhere but o-line here. Maybe they like someone like Baker or Clady (or Cherilus if he comes through in post-season workouts) better, but o-line is where it's at.
Jenkins is an option because Law and Surtain can't play forever.
9. Baltimore
Matt Ryan, QB - Boston College
1st: Alternate: Malcolm Jenkins
2nd Alternate: Early Doucet
McNair is obviously done and Boller HAS to be out of chances, doesn't he? Ryan has a swagger that I really like and it seems like he'd match up well with Billick. Maybe they give Troy Smith a chance, but Ryan has carried the BC team this year and I believe is a "franchise" QB.
Remember when McAllister and Rolle were good? I cannot believe that Mason & Clayton have combined for TWO touchdowns on the season.
10. Carolina
Andre Woodson, QB - Kentucky
1st: Sam Baker
2nd: Ryan Clady
Testaverde and Carr. Oye vay! I don't know what else to write.
Carolina is a mystery. Are the skilled offensive players not that skilled, or is the line just underacheiving?
